How can a country be happy with a law that mock and ridicule its society? What gives our leaders joy in undermining the spirits of others and divide us as a population? I ask these questions in regard to a new law that gives free things to those who do well on standardized tests. How come those exposed to this law not completely disagree? When something as absurd as this is proposed, they must rise against what they see as unjust. Additionally, this new law does not represent the people equally, so to protect our beliefs and our neighbor's beliefs, we must protest and resist.
Thoreau questioned our country's progression as a democracy by saying, “Is it not possible to take one step further towards recognizing and organizing the rights of man”( Paragraph 19)? How can our country be prideful in democracy when it does not completely include everyone? To make matters worse, this new law looks to divide us even more, however, this time it’s just a simple test score. Just think of the kids who don't have the necessary tools to prepare and succeed compared to those who have everything. This can severely change the test scores. With the added pressure of all the benefits, I would succumb to the pressure and most likely do worse than I probably could have. However, I would refuse to take it due to the fact it would not be a fair test for everybody to take. Therefore, I would encourage others to do the same so the government can see that they can't just force to criteria onto us. By not protesting the government will easily take more control than it needs. They should not be able to so easily divide those who are educated from those who aren't by using one simple test.
