ENG 090, 4501

What is expression? When I sit back and actually think about all the things that people do to express their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, it really amazes me at the things people will do. It all starts when you are a young kid and you just have to tell everyone how you feel or what you saw. When you are young you will say exactly what is on your mind even if it is not in the best interest of others. Even though it seems to only affect young children it also affects teenagers as well as adults. Fashion, art, and religion are three of the most significant and effective ways to truly express ones thoughts and feelings on the world. What a person wears says a lot about who they are, where they are from, and can also tell how they view certain social, political and religious topics in today’s world. What most people do not want to reveal about themselves is that when they see someone the first thing they do is judge them by what they are wearing. When a person wears rainbow print clothing they are judged and viewed as being gay or acceptable of it, it is a rising topic that is viewed as being somewhat taboo. Style can do more than just tell about how you view certain topics, it can tell a lot about where you come from. Different regions of the United States have unique styles, as well as well as the entire world. Fashion is more than just what you wear to keep you warm or to keep cool it is also a form or art. When talking about expression one of the biggest factors is art, there are many forms and unique styles. Art is something that cannot be defined but can be redefined time and time again. The type of art that appeals to a person all depends on the type of person they are and sometimes who they want to become. Some people are more comfortable with writing their words down as others like to sing them. Dancing is one of the many ways to express feelings and emotions without having to

When dancers are writing a movement they can express their feelings with each part of their body. Being immersed in a creative process, we can reach true freedom and change our life for at least that moment. For example, in dance composition classes for children in all school programs, students have to recreate objects or animals. Students are unaware of how creative they can be. They have the opportunity to transport themselves to another world and create a dance that is uniquely theirs. I always develop my dance movements by thinking about the effect on my audience. The spectators have the opportunity to create their version or personal interpretation of the piece they are watching, and it can change their…

Dance can be used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting. The evolution of dance runs deep into history and while it is hard to find the first instance of dance, we know it certainly has been an important part of many cultures for a long time. Dance has been used in ceremonies, rituals, celebration and entertainment since the earliest existence of cultures and societies. Dance does not stop with humanity as many animals have their own form of “dance” as a way of communication. Humans can also use dance as a non-verbal way to communicate. In fact, dance has a broad range of its level of participation. It can be participatory, social, performed, ceremonial, competitive or erotic. A few sports incorporate the elements of dance such as ice skating, gymnastics, etc. Since dance has such a broad range of purpose and participation, the movements can be without significance or be specific to a gesture. When I try and analyze what dances means to me, ultimately, I see it as a multifaceted entity. Dance is part of my identity and without it I believe I would struggle with understanding who I am. First and foremost dance for me has always been a form of therapy. Growing up I hated conflict and as a result internalized my issues. Through dance I was able to find a reliable outlet to release my frustrations, fears, and inhibitions, which allowed me to explore my personal struggles through movement. Secondly I believe that movement has the power to transcend boundaries and make statements that are often hard to say. Movement is an outlet to foster awareness, dialogue, change and growth while bridging the gap between artistic expression and community…

The dictionary defines dance as “an artistic form of nonverbal communication” (“dance”). As Christians we have always heard that dancing is immoral; that dancing only led to one thing- sex. Although this is the general belief, many people find the art of ballet, such as The Nutcracker to be tasteful. Dancing embodies passion, grace and poise. Dancing is not just a mating ritual as we have been told; it is a story that is too good for words. Dancing is a way to communicate with anybody no matter what language they speak or how old they are. It is a way to cross barriers and touch souls.…
