FTP 150 Film Analysis
For this film I used many different concepts learned from FTP 150 this year. I used concepts such as different camera angles, music to give the video more emotion and further the story, using jump cuts at certain points, telling the story visually, using a script to plan the film, filming multiple shots several times, giving the actor specific direction on how he should play the role, and much more. All of these concepts put together with the actual story I had envisioned created the final product. One of the concepts I used the most was using editing and jump cuts to create a multiple perspective effect to the story. I only used jump cutting in my film for a couple of reasons, my first reason was to make it seem as time was passing by at an unknown pace. This was done in order to create a dream like effect where time does not pass the way it does in real life. My second reason was to create different angles in which the same or similar shots could be put together to create seamless transitions. I tried to incorporate several different types of angles and shots to show the journey of the character as he progresses. I used low angle shots, high angle shots, close ups, Dutch-angles (for very obvious reasons), and a few others. They also helped in creating drama, suspense, or reveal …show more content…
Although it was not originally planned to have music in the film, it dramatically helped convey the story. The three pieces I decided to use were Morning Mood for the beginning scene, Ride of the Valkyries, and the German National Anthem. What tied all these pieces together was the origin of the pieces themselves; they were German. The first piece fit nice with the morning piece. It was more of a contrast to what was actually happening on screen, which was a nice addition. The second piece also portrayed the journey to class well. The last piece was selected at the last point in order to top off this German filled

The concept of film form centers around the idea of effectively engaging an audience. Motion pictures that properly adhere to form are abundant in sensory, emotive, and thought-provoking elements. While form in any creative medium is made up of a vast number of different components, basic understanding can be met by following five general principles: function, similarity and repetition, difference and variation, development, and unity. In addition, this formal system categorizes a films ' elements as either narrative or stylistic. The film _Scott Pilgrim vs. the World_ is exemplary in its effective use of film form by not only involving its audience, but catering to each of the five principles of form.…

This past weekend a close friend of mine encouraged me to go see the documentary 9500 Liberty that was playing on Friday. Honestly I only went to be nice to my friend however as I sat and watched the documentary I quickly became very engaged. The film was about a county in Virginia which was trying to implement laws which negatively affected the steadily increasing Latino community in the area. This documentary was fantastically done and was very emotionally gripping. I was really upset because of the racist comments that were said by the Caucasian residents. It became a very ugly battle which surpassed the original purpose of the whole issue.Throughout the movie I was constantly becoming more and more angry at the behavior of the opposing…

Editing is, in my opinion, the most important aspect of film. Editing is the aspect that allows a film to guide the thoughts and associations of the spectator. Run Lola Run used a series of cuts and a collage to develop a tempo that makes the audience feel exactly how the director intended. In a way, editing can be a form of emotional manipulation. Abrupt changes in camera position can evoke an emotional response from an audience. Run Lola Run used this method several times.…

The film Birth of a Nation used the three basic types of music heard during the silent film era, which were adaptations, arrangement, and newly composed. Adaptations borrow a complete passage from another source and usually accompany large action scene. The composer Breil used Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyrie to underscore the ride of the KKK. An arrangement borrows a melody of a well-known source which is used to arouse emotions and set moods. For example, the film used Southern tunes to express stirring patriotism for the South. Lastly, Birth of a Nation had a newly composed score such as the creation of numerous leitmotifs that reinforce Griffith’s characterizations.…

It is at this part in the movie where a parallel edit is used for a just in time rescue. As Tom senior is talking about his son, the cross cut to his son walking into the office to see his dad is made. This is a cross cut edit in a just in time rescue because as Tom senior is talking his son is walking in. This allows one to see the relationship of the two characters in a part of the movie that seems to be appropriate. Later in the movie Tom senior takes Tommy to the house to show him a surprise, as Tommy opens his eyes the cross cut edit to a beautiful woman coming out of a swimming pool is shown. This is a just in time rescue because as Tommy opens his eyes it is at that time that the edit over to the woman coming out of the pool is made. This allows the viewer to see that just as he opened his eyes, the surprise Tom senior was talking about is…

    Silent Film and Music

The three basic types of music heard in original scores during the silent film era are Adaptations of Classics, Arrangements of tunes, and newly composed music. In most cases, adaptation of classics involves action and dramatic scenes. It is borrowing a large amount of an already existing composition for use in film score. In The Birth of a Nation, Mozart’s music was used for the ending of the movie and also in the scene that showed Lincoln’s assassination. The main use of classical work is during a tense, apprehensive, action or violent moment. Arrangements of tunes are mainly used to set moods, bring out emotions or to create an outlook. The musician, Joseph Breil, included tunes in The Birth of a Nation, such as “Maryland” and “Dixie”, to create a sense of brighter, less tense feel. The third type of music that is heard in original scores is new music. New music is original in the sense that it is not borrowed or taken from anywhere else. It is created for the film. D.W Griffith uses the music to represent the theme and the aspect of the story and to alter the themes. Griffith also uses new music to reflect changes that are taking place in the story.…

In the movie “Bernie”, we follow the story and between a Carthage, Texas funeral director Bernie Tiede, and his co-dependent relationship with a wealthy widow, Marjorie Nugent. As “Bernie” unfolds, we see the companionship turn for the worse as Ms. Nugent’s ill-temper causes Bernie to snap – and lands her dead in her freezer. This movie brings up some questions, specifically regarding image. After analysis, the question I keep coming back to is “Was Bernie genuine and sincere? Or was it all a façade?” Although Bernie committed a horrible crime, I believe the answer to this question is “yes”- Bernie was a genuine man.…

Did you know that California is the number one state that produces adult films in the U.S? Statistics has shown that “90% of all porn is shot in the San Fernando Valley”. (Abram Susan,) But why is the Valley of San Fernando the home of pornography? Well, it's all thanks to Hal Freeman an adult film actor in 1983 (One thing that you have to know is that in 1993 porn was illegal). He was sued by the state and sent to the Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court noticed how Hal Freeman wasn’t making the porn just to grab attention from the people, he was trying to make a living out of his own films. Therefore, pornography was first legalized in the San Fernando Valley (Faraci). Proposition 60 is a ballot that wants to protect adult film workers…
