Fabric Technology
Student Workbook
2014

Dear Parents

For the next 10 weeks your daughter will be taking a course in Fabric Technology, during which time she will be designing and making a bag. The aim of the course is to familiarise the students with the design process and teach them to use the sewing machine safely.

Your daughter will design the bag she is to make, and make her own pattern at school.

Your daughter will require:

fabric – woven, no stretch, vinyl, fur or very thick fabric (you may already have suitable fabric at home).

matching thread

iron-on interfacing (if necessary) pins

bobbin that will fit a Bernina machine – optional, but preferred

notions if required (buttons, domes, elastic, sew-on velcro etc – no zips or stick on velcro)

Your co-operation in providing these materials will ensure your daughter receives maximum benefit from this course. It is a good idea to buy all the requirements when purchasing fabric, as time is often wasted when students do not have the required items and cannot progress with their sewing.

Students will be required to keep their sewing at school until the bag is completed and marked.

Thank you

Yours sincerely

Mrs Margaret Kantor
HOD Technology

The South's predominant economic principle before the War of Northern Aggression was "Cotton is King." The South, as it was known around the turn of the 19th century, was solely dependent upon its cotton production. Low prices, unmarketable goods, and over-used land were driving the necessity for slavery and the need for cotton production out. Were it not for a Yankee's ingenuity, the South as we study it now may have been vastly different.…

In both‘Harrison Bergeron’, written by Kurt Vonnegut and‘Examination Day’, written by Henry Sleasar an important idea is Totalitarian and Fascistic control. Today’s society can relate with this idea because of the things happening in Syria. But not just through the law but in societies every thought and actions, even if they have a kid, their smartness looks and strength. If you’re pretty we’ll hide your beauty. If you’re strong? Then you get burdens. If you’re smart? Well we’ll give you whacking headaches and make you blind. But if you’re stupid, mentally disabled, physically disabled? Well then you’re perfect.…

They let nothing go to waste, whether it was food, fabric, cans, any other household object, or even old chicken feed sacks and flour sacks. “With feed sacks and flour bags, farm women took thriftiness to new heights of creativity, transforming the humble bags into dresses, underwear, towels, curtains, quilts, and any other household necessities” (Feedsack Dress). Women were able to keep their children warm and clothed by adding a touch a creativity and thriftiness. The companies producing the sacks soon realized that sacks with the more attractive patterns were being sold first. It soon became a competition between companies to see who could create the loveliest design with the most unique colors. Women would then make their families fashionable clothing and with the leftover scraps they would create one of a kind quilts. If they met their family’s needs, they would sell the leftover fabric or their newly created clothes in hopes of earning a few extra dollars. Soon, competitions appeared where women would participate in quilting bees or display their work at the state fair in hopes to win a blue ribbon. Sewing was a useful and fun way to distract women from the hardships they were facing, all while helping them provide for their…

Other supplies that might be helpful include a stapler, paper clips, maps, a calculator, a pencil sharpener, tape, glue, paste, scissors, a ruler, a calculator, index cards, a thesaurus and an almanac. If possible, keep these items together in one place. If you can't provide your child with needed supplies, check with her teacher, school guidance counselor or principal about possible sources of assistance. For books and other information resources, such as suitable computer Web sites, check with the school library or your local public library. Some libraries have homework centers designed especially to assist children with school assignments.…
