Thesis: Sherman Alexie’s poem “The Facbook Sonnet” reveals how social media distorts our lives.
Plot Summary: Facebook turned into a place where people are searching for any sort of attention. It is safe to say that the majority of people only use Facebook to creep on people from their past and compare themselves to others which lowers their self-esteem. A person can log in to Facebook, post whatever they want, belong to any church they want; however, it is really all pretend. The sarcasm in this poem really makes readers wrapped up in social media, take a step back to think about what is more important in life.
Topic sentence 1:
Alexie humorously starts off this poem by stating a truth: Facebook is used, in large part, to reconnect with old high school classmates. However, these “friends” usually haven’t seen each other in many years. “Welcome to the endless high school reunion” (Alexie, line 1,2)
Topic sentence 2: Most kids don’t even play with toys anymore. “Let’s play all the games/that occupy the young”. (Alexie, line 8-9)
Topic sentence 3: Alexie is pointing out how far our society has come that things so sacred such as attending Mass can now be done online. “Let church.com become our church”. (Alexie, Line 12)
Conclusion: In conclusion, The sarcasm in this poem really makes young readers, wrapped up in social media, take a step back to think about what is more important in life. It’s ironic that he describes Facebook as lonely, when it is a place to reconnect with friends. I think Alexie feels that Facebook is just a fake face of oneself. A person can log in to Facebook, post whatever they want, belong to any church they want, however, it’s really all pretend.
