The morally right thing to do in this situation would be to honor the marriage, even if there was a disagreement with the other partner’s actions. When Mildred turns in Montag, she goes against her vows of marriage. Throughout the novel, Montag honors his marriage by taking care of his wife through sickness and health. In the beginning of the story Mildred overdoses on sleeping pills causing her to lose her consciousness. Montag takes action by doing the right thing and getting someone to help him fast by getting her stomach pumped out. (Bradbury 11-12) Although this was probably not the first time this has happened Montag did his job as a husband to take care of her, this action displayed that Montag had compassion in the relationship and knew it was necessary to take care of his ill wife. As the man of the household Montag has the job that helps pay for all of her precious belongings like her wall-to-wall TVs, he sacrifices exceedingly much to take care of her and to keep her happy meanwhile she does nothing. Mildred should have done the morally right thing by taking care of her husband and protecting him just like he has done for her in the past. During the time of McCarthyism in the United States people were accusing others of being communists, although this was morally the wrong thing to do people were still doing it just to save themselves (Bowen Cold War Lecture, Independence Hall Association McCarthyism). In Fahrenheit 451 Mildred’s situation was very similar to this, she chose to make the morally wrong decision by turning in her husband just like people were accusing and turning in others for being communists just to save
