Fahrenheit 451 Scavenger Hunt
What is Science Fiction?
Science fiction is a form that deals principally with the impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals. If science concerns itself with discovery, then science fiction concerns itself with the consequences of discovery. It is a testament to the visionary nature of the form that science fiction writers predicted the advent of atomic weapons and sentient machines. It endures value though is in its capacity to ask probing questions of each new scientific advance, to conduct a dialogue with progress that decodes its real meaning and reveals it to us.
Isaac Asimov defines science fiction for us. He says, “Modern science fiction is the only form of literature that …show more content…
consistently considers the nature of the changes that face us, the possible consequences, and the possible solutions.
That branch of literature which is concerned with the impact of scientific advance upon human beings.” It is also important that science fiction should to some extent be in accordance with science, it should not be completely unbelievable, because it then ventures into the genre fantasy. The boundary line does get fuzzy with some strange examples of mixed magic and technology, but there is still a fundamental line separating science fiction and fantasy: whether it is plausible or not.
Science fiction was made possible by the rise of modern science itself, notably the revolution in astronomy and physics. Early science fiction writers Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein(1818), Robert Louis Stevenson
Who wrote Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), and Jonathon Swift
Who wrote Gulliver’s Travels(1726).
