entitled to avoid the draft…”(Doc B). This means they were not being just, and making sure everyone got an equal chance of being drafted. Also, Rome didn’t enforce laws evenly. The wealthy in the Roman society was seen more highly, and got away with more laws. The text says, “A wealthy lawbreaker is not punished for is injustice, while a poor man undergoes the legal penalty.” ( Doc E). This is important to the “fall” of Rome because the Roman citizens that didn’t have money were caused to feel less important. Overall, Rome “fell” because of their lack of equality among the wealthy and poor. The second factor of the decline of the Roman Empire was they misunderstood their enemies. For instance, The Romanian people judged the Huns on bias opinions; Ammianus Marcellinus stated, “Like unthinking animals, they are completely ignorant of the difference between right and wrong.”(Doc D). Instead of actually getting to know their enemies the Roman people described and made people view them based on how they felt about them, or personal experience.
Also, Ex- Roman citizens who actually experienced their daily life with the Huns were happier. The text states, “ He considered his new life better than his old life among the Romans…”( Doc E). The Romans were misleading the true image of the Huns when along the Romans were not the best people after all. Nevertheless The Roman were trying to convince everyone the Huns were savages, however the Huns were misunderstood. Another cause to the Roman Empire's cascade downhill was natural disasters and diseases.
The Roman world was engulfed by tsunami, and 50,000 people lost their lives. “In the second year of the reign of Valens (366 CE) the Roman world was shaken by a violent and destructive earthquake… the tide soon returned with the weight of an immense flood which was severely felt on the coasts of Sicily…” ( Doc F). Second example is a series of plagues sickened and killed off Rome citizens. “ The resulting diseases decimated the population.” ( Doc F). This affected Rome greatly because many people were killed and others too sick, which lowered number of people able to be in conscription. So, the Romans had to get help from the Germanic soldiers. In conclusion the Romans fell due to things going in their natural environment. The primary reasons Rome “fell” was because of a poor government, they misunderstood their enemies, and natural disasters & diseases. All together as a whole we should take away from this is before just going to fight our enemies let’s get an understanding about who they are. Also, we should make sure everyone is equal and that we’re not putting certain people over others based on wealth. Every country’s leader should take away from this is put people the people of the country first, and to build a successful
government.
