Fallacies In Arguealer's 'Guilt'
This quote illustrates to readers one of the fallacies used in this novella: Guilt by Association. Squealer attempts to persuade the animals on the farm into letting the pigs drink all the milk and fresh apples by using this fallacy. He makes it seem that if the pigs do not eat the milk and apples that Mr. Jones would come back. By associating an undesirable person to this idea, the animals allow the pigs to eat the apples and drink the milk. A recent example of Guilt by Association is the one involving the police force shooting innocent/unarmed people of color. Due to the numerous incidents, many people believe that ALL police officers are guilty because they are associated with these events. However, this is not the whole truth. There are

Here, Squealer convinces the animals that the pigs eating the apples and milk is justified by using the animals’ fear of Farmer Jones returning to his advantage. Already , the society is not ideal because the pigs are essentially deceiving the other animals so that they can have the most comfortable life possible. Later, the pigs go even farther by deliberately changing the written rules of the society. After hearing rumors about the pigs sleeping in beds and recalling that animals…

There is a lack of evidence to prove Jones’ supposedly despicable character, and one can already tell that by acknowledging the lack of witnesses. Not only there are no witnesses, but the only person testifying for Harris (his wife) indirectly defies his claims by revealing his alcoholic and violent tendencies. Harris’ wife disclosed that once her husband threw a meat platter at her, and on several occasions, he overwhelmed her emotionally. Her testimony and the already said no apparent witnesses, all in all, question the validity of Harris’s claims and the benevolence of his character. Furthermore, Jones’ actions cannot be considered reckless or extreme because he never caused injury to Harris, nor did he act in an atrocious manner that would be deemed intolerable in this society.…

The third mention of guilt does not have to do with Dunny. Near the end of the novel, Dunny has Boy and Paul, who is now Magnus, over to where he lives. They are admiring the hominess of where Dunny lives. They remark about an odd paperweight that Dunny owns. When Boy asks where he got it, Dunny seems surprised that Boy does not remember it. The rock on Dunny’s desk is the same one that Boy put in the snowball he threw, which hit Mary Dempster when they were kids. Boy seems to have forgotten about this incident, claiming that he does not remember doing it and has completely forgotten everything about his childhood as it will do him no good now. While Boy and Dunny are talking, Dunny asks if Boy remembers anything, he replies by saying “’No.…

Squealer has all the animals believing propaganda, and it brainwashed them, and made them feel as if nothing is wrong on the farm. The number one reason why Squealer is now also corrupt is because of Napoleon’s self corruption. Squealer lets Napoleon order him around because if he didn’t do so, he would probably be killed or harmed. Squealer lies for Napoleon, as he said, “Snowball has sold himself to Frederick of Pinchfield Farm…”, (Orwell 118). Squealer had no choice, but to let Napoleon control him, otherwise he would have been harmed or killed, and no good would have come out of it.…

Finch uses creative language to bring into question the credibility of the “chief witness of the state” and implies reasons as to why she might “put a man’s life at stake,” offering “guilt” as the motivation for “destroying the evidence of her crime” Tom Robinson. The Defenses statements suggests the evidence presented by the State are built on deceptive arguments that seem persuasive in an attempt to appeal to the mobs biases, which is worded as “evil assumptions.” Finch powers his argument by the phrase “in the cynical confidence that their testimony would not be doubted” and that the State was in expectancy that the Court would “go along with them” on the [evil] assumption and generalization that all Negroes lie, are immoral, and are not to be trusted around white women.…

The manner in which people behave and the events that take place in To Kill a Mockingbird demonstrates that prejudice causes unjust actions. For example, Atticus explains why Tom Robinson was convicted of raping Mayella when it was obvious that he was innocent: “The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is…

He tries to use logic when saying that the animals in charge that are doing none of the work, but all the thinking for the farm, need more food than those working hard and starving. The reasoning is not really a good reason for what Napoleon and him are wanting to do, but the animals on the farm don't know any better, they aren't educated. So, in the end, all the animals always believe what ever Napoleon has to say, or Squealer in that matter. They believe them because everything they are saying seem to make sense to them, when in reality, none of it would actually make sense to an educated person. He also uses pathos in also all…

According to the interview, O'Brien's continuing guilt over his military service in a war he opposed and his anger about government deceit. He said: "I didn't go to war as an innocent. I went to war knowing, at least convinced, that the Vietnam War was ill-conceived and morally wrong. That was my conviction. I didn't go to war an innocent. I went to war a "guilt," that is to say "guilt" being a sort of weird noun. I was not an innocent, I was a "guilt." I knew that the war was wrong. I wasn't a Henry Fleming. I wasn't a Caputo or a Kovic. I wasn't a Paul Baumer. My situation was different, and it separates me from a lot of veterans to this day. It doesn't make me better or worse, but different, in the sense that I believed that the war was wrong and I went to it anyway. I didn't go to the war with a sense that I was going to prove my own courage, for reasons of glory, for reasons of adventure, for patriotic reasons--a lot of the variables that send men off to war that are so conspicuous in most literature about Vietnam and other wars. In…

“The witness of the state… have presented themselves to you… in cynical confidence that their testimonies won’t be doubted [because of]... the evil assumption - that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings.” (Lee 273). This was a line quoted from Atticus during Tom Robinson's court case in To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird took place in the early 1930’s in Maycomb County, Alabama, when many people were strongly prejudiced against blacks. Atticus said this line not only to save Tom Robinson, a black man, from the wrongful verdict of rape, but potentially even some of his town from the stifling grip of prejudice. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrated that prejudice causes lack of empathy and bias; this was shown through the words and reactions to conflicts of prejudiced characters.…

Guilt is a prominent factor in Macbeth and it is experienced by various characters throughout the progression of the play. It could be said that guilt is corrosive but to what extent is open to interpretation. In relation to Macbeth, it breaks away at his sanity however it doesn't do so to an extent to drive him to commit suicide as it does to Lady Macbeth. Although Macbeth was written at a time before the introduction of Gothic literature, Macbeth has many significant Gothic elements, an instance of this being a blurred distinction between sanity and insanity.…

But also threatening the animals of their previous problem, their abusive owner from before, Mr. Jones. Once a defendant has been found guilty at trial, the presumption of innocence is shed and replaced with a presumption of guilt. The appeals process is not directly concerned with whether the jury made a mistake in its verdict, but rather focuses on the procedures which were followed in the trial leading up to that verdict. Most states have stringent time limits on presenting the court with new evidence of one's innocence…
