The purpose of this project is to research your family lineage. The history of the African American family structure was fragmented due to slavery, lack of documentation, and instability within the African American social structure. Knowing the lineage and heritage of your family often explains many traits that you carry today.…
The possibility of having different types of backgrounds that her mother or father may not have known about, really sparked her interest. Throughout her essay she compares her thoughts on genealogy to her thoughts on her ancestors. She believes the reason people seek to find out about their past is for our exploration and for our superstitious minds. We are trying to find out who we are, by finding out who they were. As stated in her article, "The ultimate goal of DNA based on genealogy is to create a universal genetic family tree" revealing exactly how everyone in the world is related.…
Although, we may not always get together that often, we still try to stay as close as we can. We have a countless amount a traditions we go through every year, small and big. Every Christmas is spent at the grandparents, and my aunt and mom switch off every year for thanksgiving. These are the main cliche holiday traditions that we keep as a whole. Yet, my mom, brother and I like to get away to keep a tradition for ourselves. Every year we would sneak away from family and go to Panama City Beach. It gave us all time to relax from everything and just be able to do what ever we wanted. There was no power over any one and we just lived life care free for a couple weeks. Many of these traditions we have as a family make us closer every…
When I was young i never knew my background or where I was from. I knew I was born and raised in Louisiana but i wanted to know more about my past family. My grandfather always tells me that on my his side of the family it´s mainly russian, but on my grandmother´s side it´s mainly french. My mom, aunts, and uncles can all speak fluent french because my great grandmother did not know english so they had to learn it. The basics of my family is cajun french, or creole.…

In addition to learning about diversity in my community and the United States I also have learned some new interesting facts about my own race, ethnicity and cultural history. The first thing I learned was that three generations ago when my great-great-grandfather came to the United States from Norway he married a Karankawa Indian and they settled on the banks of the Brazos river in southern Texas. This is where the dark hair and dark skin comes from in my father’s side of the family. The land where they settled is still in my family today and is currently due to be handed down to myself and my sister when our father sees fit to do so. Another cultural activity that was passed down to me on my father’s side was bow fishing in the surf of the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Fishing was the chief food source for my people and that skill and knowledge of the art of bow fishing was a welcomed addition to my family’s rich history and culture.…
A person’s background is one of the most interesting things about them because their background is what shapes them into the person they are today. An individual receives basically everything they know based on how they were raised, whether it be their beliefs, customs, or just their way of life. Our world has diversity because of this. For me, having direct descendants from Mexico has brought out my Hispanic culture and influenced the traditions my family holds.…
My group’s history is wide ranging spanning for many years and varying from region to region within the United States. I remember when I was young I use to talk to my mother a lot and asked her many questions like “Why am I called an African American?” She went on to explain that our race originally comes from Africa and we were part of a slave trade. From my mother I learned that we were slaves until a law was passed to give us freedom. I use to wonder when I was young if there were other people similar to me all over America. I also remember something my father told me once that African Americans live all over the country. My father told stories of how he used to go to an all black school could vote or sit in the front of buses.…
Michael Chrichton once said, "If you don't know your family's history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree." This quote proves the significance of family and knowing where you come from. It is all part of what Russell Baker says is the "braided cord of humanity", meaning that your past that will bring you to your future. This is why, because of family struggles, the trust family's hold, and the past each comes from, these help contribute to what makes a family. Every family has their own personal struggles, and in the end, the outcome is always stronger…
In the morning, December 31st, we clean in our house together. That is our job every year. Next, my mother and grandmother usually make a dinner for New Year’s Eve. Whatever the circumstances, many of us honestly dont know how to celebrate together. We may even see the word "tradition" as something stultifying and old, having no meaning for or application to us personally; something usually being forced upon us by someone who smells funny and is only seen on holidays. What all of this means is that we can no longer simply follow the examples of old. It is up to us to create new family traditions. Celebrating is not hard. We all know about celebrating and have some ways of doing it. The only challenge is to find new ways. Why do we need to celebrate tradition? It gives us something to look forward to and makes a formal statement that there are some things in life to be grateful for.…

Every once a year, someone always has that one tradition they like to do on a holiday. Well, mine so happens to be on Christmas. Every year on Christmas, my family and I like to play fun games after opening our presents and done having dinner. Some may have the same thing every year just like my family, but in my opinion, I don’t think it’s the actual same. My family and I like to be different every year.…
