Rough Draft Discourse Comm.
Social discourses
As the years pass I seem to become a part of more and more communities. Due to every job that I have had and all the new friends I make along to way. Through out high school I became apart of many different social discourses. Between the sports, friendships, jobs, and activities I became a part of, it almost seemed like everywhere I went I was talking in a different language. It's strange when you actually come to think about it, there are several different non-verbal and verbal cues among each community.
First off, sarcasm is heavily used around all of my close friends. It seems that we are always making fun of each other in a joking sense. So much that outsiders on the situation think we are not friends at all. For example , a close friend and I would joke around about disliking each other, leaving sarcastic “hate” comments on each others Facebook wall, which would sometimes turn out to become huge fake arguments. Since my mom did not catch the sarcasm in the conversation that was posted. She became somewhat offended in how I was talking. So, later that day she confronted me …show more content…
on the conversation , asking me “what was that all about”? Since she didn’t understand the nature of the context she was somewhat clueless of what actually was going on. Even after I had explained myself, she still was not enthused about what our conversation conveyed. This became a huge communication barrier between my mom and I for quite some time. What was a social norm for me between my friends was something oblivious to her.
Secondly, sports have become a very large part of my lifestyle, not only has all of my jobs so far revolved around sports, I have been an athlete since the fourth grade. Ranging from football, track, tennis, baseball, and gymnastics. Football was by far the sport I had the most passion for. Coming from a decently small school, our team grew up with each other and became somewhat of a family. When someone new came in, not only did they have to prove themselves for the coaches, they had to prove himself to the team. As a Matter of fact we have had a few players quit because of this reason. If many of us did not feel comfortable with them not being on the team, by the end of the first weeks practice they would have a very strong hint of it.
Keeping that in mind, Gymnastics has put a very large impact on my life. During my sophomore year in high school I started coaching the basics of the sport, and by my senior year I was teaching other coach's around the state how to properly spot gymnastics. Now, it has lead me a head spotting job at Winona State University. Most spotters that have the experience that I have, are about 10 years older than me. for this reason I get a lot of strange questions and looks when I walk into an upper level gym where they don't know me. Which I don't blame them one bit, it can be very hard for a gymnast to trust a new spotter. Also, there is a whole knew language you have to learn. It took me around a year to pick up all the different way to communicate around a gym. For every different skill, there is some type of strange name to go along with it. This is definitely a sport where athletes have to show power not only within themselves, but also showing other teammates and the coach that they have to confidence perform.
Pursuing this further, in every sport that I have participated in, I have learned there is always something knew to learn. There are always different social norms between each individual community. No matter what skill level it is, each team has their own style of language, power, and behavior.
Thirdly, family has always been a very large aspect of life.
Although, we may not always get together that often, we still try to stay as close as we can. We have a countless amount a traditions we go through every year, small and big. Every Christmas is spent at the grandparents, and my aunt and mom switch off every year for thanksgiving. These are the main cliche holiday traditions that we keep as a whole. Yet, my mom, brother and I like to get away to keep a tradition for ourselves. Every year we would sneak away from family and go to Panama City Beach. It gave us all time to relax from everything and just be able to do what ever we wanted. There was no power over any one and we just lived life care free for a couple weeks. Many of these traditions we have as a family make us closer every
year.
Over the small amount years I have under my belt, I have experienced a vast amount of social discourses on the way. Many of which I have had no control of what so ever. The point is that, communication between other can take you some strange and unusual places in life where you never expected. If you end up at the right place and the right time, new things can happen ever so fast. I am always anticipating for the next step towards something new and just different. Becoming part of different communities can help out with these immensely. If I would have never started coaching gymnastics, I would have never thought I would have been owning my own house next year and becoming the head spotter for a college team. Life takes you in some strange paths, but the people you meet along the way can just make it that much more interesting.
