Family Therapy Video Analysis

Watching the video of the relationship therapist being interviewed taught me about what she does and some of the problems she sees in relationships. I didn’t know that you could have more than one specialty as a therapist. I always thought that if you were a couple’s therapist you dealt with romantic relationship problems. I thought family therapists dealt with familial problems and I just figured that work related issues would be addressed in a private therapy session, unless the company you work for holds group therapy sessions for their employees. I was also very surprised to hear that men come to Ms. Vatcher for help as often as women do. I have always assumed that men are the people that are most skeptical about therapy. I also believed they were the very last people that would ask for help.
One thing about this video that did not surprise me was the fact that communication issues are the most common topic amongst her and her clients.
From experience communication issues have been the source of a lot of disagreements or misunderstandings. I probably would have greatly benefitted from someone helping me or the other person understand where the miscommunication came into play and how we could avoid the same thing from happening in the future. Couples therapy, or relationship therapy has always interested me. As a child, being a couple’s therapist was my dream job. I wanted to help people with their relationship problems and get the relationship back on the right track. The video was very insightful and shared enough information that would help me understand what a relationship therapist’s job consists of. The therapist also seemed very positive and willing to help anyone that needed
it.
