President Roosevelt is the ethos of the address and persuades Congress to allow him to declare war on the Empire of Japan. He used words like “deliberately” in a repetitive manner (1). He does so to manipulate and engrave the word into the pathos, or Congres’s heads, and he does this very well. He makes it his intention and his ultimate purpose to make sure they go to war. This line is aimed towards making the pathos angry at Japan. “And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack”(1). He states that they are cowards, and they had time to warn us. “It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago”(1). He continues to drive the idea of treachery and deceitfulness when he says “last night” repeatedly.
He sets a goal to defend our nation. “I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense”(1). Roosevelt says we will win, and we will not allow this to happen again. “The American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.”. “but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us”(1).
