The work describes Newt Scamander who as a boy was very interested in fantastic beasts and after graduating from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry went on to work for the Ministry of Magic in the Care of Magical Creatures Department. In 1918, he began to travel around the world in search of all kinds of magical creatures. He then would study the creatures and document his experiences in this book (Scamander and Rowling xvii). Although the book is written in the style of an encyclopedia, it tells of the contrasting regions of the Wizarding World versus the Muggle World and the identity crisis among Beings and Beasts.

That issue is with the identity of creatures. “The definition of “beast” has caused controversy for centuries” (Scamander and Rowling xviii). If you are a “being”, you are worthy of legal rights and a voice in the governance of the magical world. If you are a beast, you have no legal rights or voice within the governance of the magical world. While one might think it would be easy to determine whether one is a beast or a being, it is quite the contrary. You have to realize that there are Trolls who have a human appearance but may only know few words, Werewolves that spend most of their time as a human and Centaur’s whose habits are not humanlike but have intelligence equal to that of wizards and Muggles (Scamander and Rowling xix). It was not until 1811 that most of the magical community agreed on an acceptable definition of a beast and a being. This is very much like in our own world and how it took us hundreds of years to get to a point of resembling something of
