According to document 5, the description written by Sook Nyul Choi in Korea between the end of WWII and 1950, Korea was actually a “victim country” for the Cold War that existed between the US and the USSR. This could be proven by the fact that people were affected negatively by these communist soldiers and weapons such as tanks and guns. The communist troops from both China and Russia not only threatened people which led to the Northern refugees to escape to Seoul, people who are “labeled” as traitors were shot with machine guns and hanged in the town square for other people to see as a bad example to not follow. Then looking at document 6a, the map shows the result of the Korean War from 1950-1953. North Korea and South Korea were being divided along the 38th parallel due to their difference in supporters and political views. These evidences shows how the Cold War made Korea into battlefields and by the Russians supporting communist in the north, and the Americans spreading capitalism in the south, this led to the Korean War. The war not only led to the division of Korea, it also caused millions of soldiers and civilians to lost lives and which destroyed the economy in both North and South…
Hemingway’s inspiration was war, both as a personal and symbolic experience and as a continuing condition of humankind.…
World War One (WWI) was arguably the most costly conflict in human history. With over "one third of men returning home" with serious mental ailments, this war had effects long after the armistice treaty (World War I Document Archive 18). This war lasted well past the signing of the treaty and went on to spark the beginning of the Second World War in 1939. Veterans were plagued with sickness long after the effects of the gas wore off and long after the guns fell silent, and to this day photographs of the trenches send chills down the spine of any man. WWI conjures up images of a no man 's land strewn with dead bodies; their faces concealed with primitive gas masks. It was one of the only conflicts where the tactics failed to keep up with technology and, as a result, had a devastating effect on human life. The elements of WWI including chemical warfare and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are illustrated in Ernest Hemingway 's "Soldier 's Home".…
War has existed since the dawn of time and, since the beginning, has impacted humanity in various ways. While wars do mold and transform nations, more importantly, wars have had and will have a great impact on soldiers, those willing to sacrifice their lives for their country. The novels A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway and The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien give us a glimpse into how war has impacted soldiers and those close to them. The novel A Farewell to Arms talks of a man who falls in love with a woman he works with, a nurse in the hospital, Catherine Barkley. The narrator, Frederic Henry, meets the nurse while he is working in the army.…
The Korean War “was a symbol of the global struggle between… good and evil” (History.com). This war could have been the start of World War III. The two largest military powers in the world were backing opposite sides of a border war. South Korea and the United States were the “good guys” because they believed that their morals were better than that of North Korea and the Soviet Union who were viewed as the “big bad bully.” America's involvement in the war symbolized that good moral can’t be defeated by any amount of evil. Morals are a hard thing to hold onto…
Most soldiers come back from war with physical injuries. However there are also the injuries without the physical scars; the “hidden” wounds of battle. The horrors of armed conflict and war often leave scars on the psyches of soldiers. Soldiers often come home diagnosed with psychological disorders. They are affected mentally by their war experiences. Ernest Hemingway’s, “Soldier’s Home” portrays war in a realistic and raw perspective because it focuses on the war’s true capability to mentally damage and drastically change a soldier.…
War is portrayed as just an armed state of conflict habitually, but that does not begin to cover the depths of it.War tears at an individual, whether you are a soldier fighting for your nation or daughter waiting for her father to return home unscathed. Additionally, it comes with the heavy price. Through the words of Jose Narosky, "In war, there are no unwounded soldiers." Every man or woman receives some type of damage. People are broken down by their surroundings and left emotionally and mentally paralyzed. Piece by piece a person is plagued by war's appalling actions. It is a very cruel reality but an accurate one.No matter what war is transpiring, this same outcome is precise. The World War 1 based novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Marque examines the…
In The Story "The Soldier Who Won The War" by R. L. Anony talks about War which has been a constant part of humans history, It has greatly affected the lives of people in the world today. However, the affect after war is extremely detrimental, some people take it well while others have horrible experiences which scars them forever even after war itself. For those that cant mentally overcome these bad experiences may develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, However, soldiers are not the only ones affected by wars; family members also experience mental hardships when their love ones are sent to war. Eli Fisher War story is a great example of literature that expresses what any soldier has experienced from the war once returning home.…
Ernest Hemingway illustrates in his book, Farewell to Arms, the character of Frederick Henry; an ambulance driver, who is put to the ultimate test during the madness and atrocity of WWI. His experiences at the front pose a challenge only a Hemingway hero can affront successfully. As the epitome of a code hero, Frederick is a man of action,self-discipline, and one who maintains grace under pressure but lacks certain characteristics a person should possess. Throughout the book, Hemingway expresses a variety of themes which include death, traditional values, and courage.…
Hemingway showed signs of PTSD in “Soldier’s Home” when coming home from WWI. “In the evening he practiced on his clarinet, strolled down town, and went to bed.” (Hemingway 1) This unwillingness to break out of routine is a classic symptom of PTSD. He is unable to find happiness in simple things; even in things he found happiness in before the war. “Ernest Hemingway's "Soldier's Home" is a parallel to his own thoughts about WWI and his suffering of PTSD as a result. His entire worldview has been skewed by his traumatic experiences in the war, and the ability to genuinely love requires an emotional balance he lost during the war. This PTSD the author gets, comes to somewhat of resentment toward war.…
The first thing that has to be noted about the Korean War is the indirect confrontation of the superpowers thus united states of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). These two super powers were of different ideology and beliefs. The USA believed in democracy and was capitalist whilst the USSR was more of dictatorship and was communists. The USSR came in Korea to support the Northern part of Korea which was under the rule of the communist, Kim ll Sung, after the defeat of Japan by the USA. The USSR supported the south because of its ‘sphere of influence’. The USSR saw Korea as an easy access to the newly ‘born’ communist Japan. It had its own economical interests. On the other hand, the USA under the approval of the UN joined by giving military support to the anti-communist Dr.Syngman Rhee, the leader of the South Korea, for several reasons. Some of the reasons were; Truman was convinced that the attack by Kim II Sung was Stalin’s doing and saw it as a Russian plan to spread communism as widely as possible so she had to take action as soon as possible. Also, some Americans saw the invasion as similar to…
North and South Korea has been at war and it caused fear in America because if North Korea won then America was afraid that the rest of Asia would join communism. So America joined the war against North Korea and while aiding South Korea, China had decided to join North Korea in the war as well since they are allied with North Korea. The war was one of the most deadliest wars in American history. The war was very dangerous with the elements there for America because they were not use to the temperatures there. The war for Korea has begun and will not go well for both sides in the war.…
The novel I read was A Farewell to Arms. It was written by Ernest Hemingway. The overall difficulty reading of this book was easy. Even though the book was uninteresting, it was easy to comprehend. Because of the book being uninteresting it took a while to read.…
This July 27th marks the 60th anniversary of the armistice agreement that ended the combat phase of the Korean War, but the conflict did not end on July 27, 1953, it merely came to a temporary halt. Though the Korean War may been overshadowed by World War II and the Vietnam War in the minds of many Americans, it had a dramatic effect on social change in the United States ("Korean War had major impact on race relations..."). We have spent the past 60 years living not in a post-war era, but under a ceasefire. The Cold War may have ended 20 years ago with the fall of the USSR, but the same feelings remain alive and well on the Korean Peninsula. In this period and during the last years of the Bush administration as well, North…
On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Meanwhile, American officials worked anxiously to fashion some sort of armistice with the North Koreans. The alternative, they feared, would be a wider war with Russia and China–or even, as some warned, World War III. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives during the war. The Korean peninsula is still divided today.…
