Unfair treatment between the rich and the poor played a huge part in not only The New York Draft Riot but also the Watts riot. Racism also a great deal had a deal in the tragedies that spread all throughout New York City and Los Angeles. New York Draft Riot is one of America's most devastating riots. It began as a mild rally against the national draft, but turn took a worse as it focused more on the racial and social struggle. In the text, The Gangs Of New York, Asbury gives a very in depth description of the New York Draft Riot. According to Asbury,"The fighting raged through the street of New York City from Monday to Saturday, it had begun as a protest against the Conscription Act". March 1863, the U.S. Congress passed the conscription…

But what is fashion? We could approach this question either in a simple or complex way. If we had to define it briefly, we would say that it is the latest style of clothing. As Rouse outlines: ‘Fashion is more than a commodity, the product of a particular industry, it is an attribute with which some styles are endowed. For a particular style of clothing to become a fashion it actually has to be worn by some people and recognized and acknowledged to be a fashion’ (1989:69). Apparently, the evolution of fashion is strongly connected to the development of society in the history. Several historical factors played decisive role in enabling society to change, such as the growth of the trade during the thirteenth century that resulted the merchant class to be in the ascendant by amassing their wealth. It seemed that there was some kind of possibility for the middle class to rise, and having social ambitions, they not only wanted to compete with the upper class, but to exceed them. They could not have manifested their aim in a most obvious way than in dress. Therefore the concept of fashion itself grew out from the human mind as a tool of…

Change is inevitable, as Charles Darwin has proven through his theory of evolution. Starting from as early as the 13th century to the present day, fashion and its role in society has significantly evolved. The evidence of this evolution shows exactly how the connection between fashion and social status within different societies has changed over time. Fashion is a very popular part of any culture, with a variety of different colors, fabrics, designs and brands. Of course the sole purpose of clothes comes naturally to us as we do not ask ourselves "Should I get dressed today?", but instead we ask "What should I wear?" This question has subsequently lead to the stereotyping of one's appearance to their social status.…
Driven by my passion for sustainable fashion, I am particularly interested in the environmental impact of garment waste ending up in landfills. Every year, 0.5 million tonnes of clothing are dumped into landfill sites in the world (M&S.com, 2013). Furthermore, one in four garments sold is thrown away each year. Textile waste in landfills is now raising environmental issues. For example, synthetic fibre products do not decompose and this threatens local group water suppliers. Since there are many chemical and toxic materials such as dyes and bleaches in rubbish, water that passes through the rubbish may become 200 times more toxic than raw sewage. In contrast, woollen garments do decompose but produce methane that leads to climate issues.…

Fashion is a popular style trend that people follow. And this trend mostly becomes known through the representation on magazines and fashion shows. While magazines and fashion shows have a big impact on making fashion trends known, it also has some problems on the way it represents it. Fashion is well known to link beauty with body image, particularly with thin body image and that influences people with a fuller body image to not have confidence and being insecure about themselves.…
For hundreds of years people have placed some message in the type of clothing they wore. Long ago people wanted to be different from other people by altering their clothing. Some examples of “standing out” became very popular and many people followed. This was the moment when fashion appeared. Clothing is basically a covering designed to be worn on a person 's body and it is a necessity that is resolved by the norms of social conduct. This “necessity” brings a lot of variety into the lives of people and makes their image more integrated. It is not about people serving fashion; it is about fashion being a slave of people.…
