Fast Food Companies Inducing Obesity In America
America is known to be the most overweight country in the world. Early this year, the centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported, “… 35.7 percent of adults and 16.9 percent of children age 2 to 19 are obese” (Begley, news.yahoo.com). The main cause for this obesity epidemic is the fast food Americans on a weekly basis. The fats and sugars put into the food during processing are causing people to gain weight at a rapid pace. As a nation, America needs to step back and look at the current situation. They need to look at how obesity became a problem, the factors causing obesity, how the food they eat made and how that is affecting them, and how to change. Being overweight wasn’t always looked down upon. Suzanne S. Wiley states that before the 1900s, “Being fat was a mark of wealth and health…” (livestrong.com). Before the last couple of decades it took a great deal of effort to obtain food. So obtain food for the calories you would have to burn a lot of calories. This helped keep humans physically fit. Walking to places was also very common. The food that they ate was also more organic so it was healthier. What has changed in the last couple of decades that has caused Americans to become so overweight? There are several different reasons for why Americans have become so overweight. As stated earlier, walking from place to place was a common practice 40 years ago. This allowed for Americans to get good exercise. Today we don’t exercise enough. Since we aren’t exercising as much as we used to we are not burning as many calories as in the past. This leads fat to build up in the body which causes people to become overweight. For others keeping weight off is very difficult due to diseases and inherited genes. Some Americans have inherited genes that cause their metabolism to work more slowly than others. Since food doesn’t pass
