It remains one of the biggest problems in American society and requires a careful, systematic but also immediate solution. Americans are some of the least healthy people in the entire country. The obesity epidemic affects millions of people in the United States. Sadly, enough obesity is a problem that affects everybody, not just adults. Obesity has increased in the past decade, predominantly with people who eat poorly; this is so sad. You may not notice it, but, weeks turn into months and months turn into years and the next thing you know your clothes don’t fit the way they used to and the entire time you never even noticed yourself gaining weight. America; “Nearly one-third of the adults in the United States is overweight with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2, and another third of the adult population is obese, with a BMI greater than 30 kg/m2” (Mobley and Baum 165-170). Obesity is the second leading cause, behind tobacco, of preventable deaths in the United States. More than half of Americans are overweight and almost one third are obese. Countless of Americans nowadays want to make their fast-paced lives as stress free as possible; Many Americans are single parents or perhaps many parents work two jobs, or more and depend on finding alternative food choices for their children, a type of unhealthy food because it is cheap, quick, tasty, and convenient to give their children fast-food rather than a prepared home cooked meal. This food choice may be pathetic, but this may be only food alternative for most parents to give their children; besides it’s a lot cheaper than cooking. If you go over a relative or maybe even a friend’s house to eat, chances are when you open the refrigerator you will see some left-over french-fries, burgers, pizza, cookies, sodas and a numerous amount of unhealthy food items in their refrigerator. Yes, this will be found in the homes of many Americans, whether they like to admit it or not. Yu and Yan research states that obesity (body mass index ≥ 30) and educational attainment have increased dramatically in the United States since the 1970s.
Yu and Yan studies both analyzes the influences of educational inequalities in obesity and population improvements in education on national obesity trends between 1970 and 2010. Throughout the decades, our bodies have become fond of this type of food we process in our bodies without realizing the many harmful effects it has on our immune system; given time. Many Americans may complain that they are overweight, but, high number of calories in the food they eat and deficiency of exercise have led to a surge in obesity in the Americans of the United States. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States more than one-third of adults and one-sixth of children are obese.
Research has shown that obesity amongst young Americans is problematic and can have serious effects on the future of our children if nothing is done about it. Although many Americans don’t want to touch on this subject; Obesity is a dangerous situation in the United States and is spiraling out of control; obesity is threatening to set back all advancements that have been made in medicine that have permeated society to live a long and prolonged life over time. As Americans, we should recognize that; it is imperative to know that there is a difference between being obese and being overweight. Did you know that obesity is an ailment in the body which becomes grossly fat or overweight overtime; if you are exaggerating your proportions; before you know it, you could possibly become morbidly obese. Being obese is not the same as simply being overweight, which can be caused by extra muscle, bone, or water, along with having too much fat. Research has also found that genetic, environmental and behavioral factors are linked to the onset of obesity.
An overweight person is defined as someone with body fat percentage of fifteen to twenty percent above average. Obesity is a term used to describe body weight that is much greater than what is considered healthy. The biggest questions researchers as well as in our society lately has been the question of what causes obesity; specifically, among poor and minorities: is it genetics. This question has been researched and studied for decades. Do we believe it’s the environment we live in? or maybe because you just can’t resist your mothers down home cooking.
Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2009–2010. More than 2 in 3 adults are overweight or obese. More than 1 in 3 adults are obese. More than 1 in 20 adults are considered to have extreme obesity. About one-third of children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are overweight or obese. More than 1 in 6 children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are obese. Obesity is an epidemic that plagues our nation. Although you may think that you're exempt; no minority or group is omitted from the obesity epidemic. Flat out we as a nation are fat, and debauched in the lifestyles we choose to live. Let me ask you a question; How many times do you eat fast food a week? How frequently do you eat a well-proportioned meal? If I had to an educated guess, not often, but you are thin so you believe that you are healthy. Throughout the past forty to sixty years’ obesity has spiraled out of control. As it stands in our country today, nearly one third of adults is considered obese. Did you hear me; nearly one third of adults is considered obese. Their no secret that the average weight of a person went up overwhelmingly throughout the last decade or so. Americans are becoming more and more overweight, while they're getting closer to being put in the category as obese.
Some important facts to know are, the high body fat to lean body mass ratio makes obesity a major contributor to chronic illnesses. If you were small up until a couple of years after you graduated from high school here are some factors that might have contributed to your weight gain; sedentary lifestyle and poor diet. Alarming enough obesity is on the rise and is reaching epidemic proportions across the U.S. Approximately 70 million Americans are obese-more than 1 in 3 of all adults and 1 in 5 children. Sadly, enough; as human beings, the availability of mass assortment of foods that help us survive; also; help contributes to our downfall; obesity. By taking in more calories than we burn off, the food then gets stored in our bodies as fat. If this problem happens regularly there may be a potential of becoming obese; so, we must please start watching what we eat and how we eat.
Dejectedly, over the next twenty years, these numbers will more than double. By the year 2020, obesity will be considered a normal thing, and a healthy weight will be the exception; and it's already 2017. Who should take the blame for the increasing obesity up rise in America today. Some experts say fast food restaurants should be blamed; because they are on every block in the city. Although we don’t want to admit it obesity among Americans has been a growing issue in the United States largely over the past decade; many may argue American’s are obese because of poor food choices, over-eating, hereditary disposition, lack of exercise; while others blame it all on fast-food chains and restaurants.
According to D’Angelo, his article "Obesity." states “In 2010 President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama each announced further initiatives to help prevent childhood obesity.” I thought this was an awesome idea due to the fact obesity was on the up rise throughout the decades and thanks to President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama they are working together as team to help decrease this hopeless epidemic.
In my research, I have come across lots of interesting facts and statistics about fast food consumption causing obesity, but I say look in the mirror and blame yourself. We as Americans can’t complain about obesity; unless we are willing to take a stand on the epidemic. Writing research papers and having scientific evidence boils down to nothing unless you are willing to fight; and change the way you
eat.
Some interesting facts I learned from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to; The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Non-Hispanic blacks have the highest age-adjusted rates of obesity (48.1%) followed by Hispanics (42.5%), non-Hispanic whites (34.5%), and non-Hispanic Asians (11.7%). Obesity is higher among middle age adults age 40-59 years (40.2%) and older adults age 60 and over (37.0%) than among younger adults age 20–39 (32.3%) (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These are some alarming statistics but as I mentioned before when you look in the mirror and start with yourself; you will soon realize this epidemic can decline tremendously if you just look in the mirror and start with yourself.
Overall I do agree that being overweight and obese are both results from people wanting to take short cuts when it comes to their health; In others words, being immobile will certainty lead to obesity. I also agree that the body needs a certain amount of energy for us to keep up with the basic life functions. This means that we as Americans must move around and stop being couch potatoes. Research has shown that body weight tends to continue to remain the same; when the number of calories people eat equals the number of calories the body burns over time; when people begin to eat, and drink more calories than they burn; the epidemic of weight gain and obesity will continue to skyrise.
We as Americans deserve to be happy and content with ourselves, no matter how many stares or comments we may get in public, or no matter what number we may see on the scale after we have weighed ourselves. Both women and men are valuable, and deserve encouragement, security, and love. Rather than feel badly about ourselves; start your journey by dealing with your obesity by accepting yourself and allowing yourself to be loved. Yes, obesity is at an all-time high but knowing that at any time we as Americans can change this epidemic; deserves around of applause.
