Throughout the course of the last nine weeks, my eyes have been opened to an entirely new world full of nutritional and exercising information. It is rough being a thirty-three year old husband and father, with an eye on trying to remain on this planet for as long as humanly possible. As parents, we all have goals we want to achieve. The usual suspects include seeing your children graduate high school and then college, walking your daughter down the aisle of her wedding, and being able to retire and continue to live a healthy and happy life. What I have come to realize through this nutritional and exercising information is that in order to accomplish this goal, there are certain aspects of my life that I need to change. I am not a particularly healthy eater. I do not exercise regularly. I mostly do what I can with the time I have available. Working out and training is a big part of my life. It is my passion and is something I look forward to everyday. There is one man that has helped change my life and shown me things that can help me to better myself and my workouts. The funny thing is I haven’t even met this man. I had been overweight since my early teens, as time passed it continued to worsen. at the age of 15 I was on the brink of obesity; I had to decide a change in my life. Throughout the semester I have been recording my eating habits on my fitness pal. I knew before I even started using my fitness pal that my eating habits were not good and to be healthy I needed to stop eating food that was so bad for me. Even though it took me over half the semester to realize that, I now can say I am on a healthier track in life and could not be happier. Throughout this process I have learned what foods are healthier to eat and what foods are really bad for you. When I first started using my fitness pal I was eating fast food literally everyday because it was so easy and convenient for me to get between my classes. Foods such as hamburgers and chicken were what I was consuming everyday. I never cared about how many calories I was taking in. As a result from eating fast food everyday I felt tired all the time. Not only did I feel tired all the time, I was gaining weight, which is never a good thing. The more calories I was taking in, the more weight I was gaining. After I realized how bad the food was that I was taking into my body I decided to put a stop to it. I no longer eat fast food and I try to eat as healthy as I possibly can. Now I eat yogurt, salad, and subs a lot. I eat those things because they are no where near as bad for you as fast food is. Before my fitness pal I never worked out because I was too lazy to but that has also changed. Not only do I eat healthy now, I workout everyday. I am so glad that I have decided to make these changes in my lifestyle because I have started losing weight. Not only do I look better, but I feel so much better. I have a lot more energy throughout the day. My fitness pal really has helped me. It opened my eyes into a whole new direction of my life that I never thought was possible. After assessing my health through an internet tool available on the Council for Responsible Nutrition wellness campaign webpage, I have reached several conclusions and understanding of my current general health status. The health assessment tool on the webpage is called “my wellness score card”. The assessment analyzes nutritional choices, use of supplements, habits, exercise, and healthy weight relative to gender, height and age. Prior to this assessment of my lifestyle, I was aware of some of my bad habits but I was under the impression that I did enough to balance it. Once I read the results, I was somewhat shocked! After careful thinking, I believe that finding out where I stand now, even though I suffer from few illnesses, can be beneficial, almost a wakeup call. Being aware of my habits and lifestyle choices is the first step in the right direction toward improving my health status.
