In A good man is hard to find, the grandmother had a complicated set of moral codes that did not compel with the natural moral codes that a catholic would be known to have. The catholic values are set to be the most reliable and trustworthy person one can be. Unfortunately the grandmother's intention…
If a person is manipulative and their actions are paid for with people’s lives, would they be considered good? In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor the grandmother shows qualities that ask that question. Three reasons why are the following, she is manipulative, selfish, and fake. There is no good man or good woman in this story.…
Through Jacobs’ writings, Alonzo was able to identify that relationships and bonds are very important. (118-122). Jacobs’ emphasizes the relationships rather than establishing herself. Personal relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and God are a major factor in her writings. She never thinks for herself, but for others. Responsibility in relationships is also emphasized in her story, for example, Mr. Sands wasn’t able to complete his responsibility as a husband and father, but Harriet Jacobs completed her responsibility as a mother and granddaughter. Her children, family and friends kept her going. Due to that, Harriet Ann Jacobs is able to conquer her fear of trust also in Incidents, who to trust and who not to trust, not only…
| * Good relationship * She was intelligently at using at the fire and using it as protection. * She is Ellie's best friend and confidante. * She is a no-nonsense country girl, who seems to always manage to get her own way. * However she is also in many ways the character most effected by the conflict, with her family home being destroyed by the enemy. * Her injury and abandonment at the end of the book is highly significant and weighs heavy on Ellie.…
The immoral character of the Misfit was very well portrayed, as well as the character of the Grandmother. Most of the characters in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” go through some kind of changes in their views of the world and in their perceptions about life and death. Such character in this particular story was the Grandmother. The unnamed grandmother considers herself morally superior to others by virtue of her being a lady and her freely and frequently passes judgment on others. She claims that her conscience was a guiding force in her life, such as when she told Bailey that her conscience wouldn’t allow her to take the children in the same direction as the Misfit. She criticizes the children’s mother for not traveling to a place that would allow the children to be broad, and she compared the mother’s face to a cabbage. She disciplines John Wesley for not having more respect for Georgia, his home state. She also takes any opportunity to be judgmental at the lack of goodness in people in the world today. During all this, she proudly wore her carefully selected dress and hat, certain that being a lady was the…
The story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a fascinating story about a family traveling to Florida for a family vacation. The story’s main characters are the grandmother, the mother and a baby, the father Bailey, and the two children June Star and John Wesley. On this trip the family has a run in with the other characters The Misfit, Bobby Lee, and Hiram who are escaped convicts headed towards Florida. O’Connor uses literary elements such as flashback and characterization to explore what it means to be a good person. It appears as the only good person in the story is the person the grandmother becomes through her struggle with the Misfit. O’Connor seems to suggest that only through conflict can the “good” be found.…
No matter where Jack goes to school, he always seems to befriend the school’s most widely known troublemakers. While Jack won’t let what others think of him define him as a person and of what he thinks of himself, he can’t help but be what he is especially when around the negativities of those who know him, especially Dwight, and the peer pressure of his juvenile friends to drink, steal, and cause trouble. One friend who actually helps Jack to be a somewhat better person is Arthur because he knows Jack for what he truly is, something other than just a rebel. While they may have met by fighting because of Jack calling Arthur a “sissy” they soon become quite close friends and Arthur helps Jack to finally leave Concrete. While his intentions are good, Jack knows he is a rebel. He breaks rules, gets bad grades, and has a terrible transcript which are the reasons Jack goes through rebellious acts to get into Hills Prep School and forges his transcript and recommendation letter with the help of Arthur. He also lies in his interview and does many other things to get into the school but through these rebellious acts Jack is slowly becoming a better person.…
Coexistence of good and evil is displayed in the character of Scout Finch. Through the eyes of Scout we begin to see the changes that occur when the innocence of youth is corrupted by a world that is not always fair. As Scout’s good character progresses through the novel she experiences the consequences of prejudice and segregation. For example, when the Finches attend their family Christmas celebration, Scout’s cousin, Francis…
Like “A Good Man is Hard to Find” written Flannery O’ Connor’s. O'Connor never tells the reader directly whether her characters are good or evil; she wants the reader to make his own judgment based on the characters' thoughts, words, and actions. For example, "She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life." here, It looks like he's recognizing that the grandmother's final act, for which he killed her, was genuinely good. This implies that it was her…
Atticus displayed selflessness when he took on Tom Robinson’s case. He knew that he was putting his job and his personal life at risk. Atticus was a well-respected man in their town of Maycomb County, but he put Tom before himself, like any hero, should. Atticus also showed selflessness with his interactions with Mrs. Dubose. He respected her, even when she does the opposite in return. He knew that she was struggling with her morphine addiction, so he showed her kindness. Atticus goes out of his way to make her happy, even when she doesn’t do the same in…
As they walked to Mrs. Miller’s work, they each had their own opinion on the exchange between Donald and Father Flynn. Mrs. Miller believed that Father Flynn was only trying to help and comfort Donald, as he never seemed frightened at home, and has always been fond of Father Flynn. Sister Aloysius, however, was deeply in disagreement and had other ideas of what happened. Ultimately, Sister Aloysius could not convince Mrs. Miller, and went back to the school. Finally, Sister Aloysius had Father Flynn removed, which brought the Parish less tension and stress. In the end, we never know what Father Flynn did or why. I believe that Father Flynn did in fact do something to Donald Miller and because of this, was tearing down Kingdom. Sister Aloysius kept her faith and loved for the students alive when trying to drive Flynn out of the school, which she ultimately did. She brought the school to a possibly more safe and loving state. I thought that Sister Aloysius was doing a great job at building Kingdom, and was defending her school at all costs. Mrs. Miller and Sister James were very confused and bewildered about what happened, and ultimately defended Father Flynn out of love for the Church, and Donald Miller. This leads me to believe both Mrs. Miller and Sister James were bringing the school closer to Kingdom, as well as…
Throughout literature, there are numerous examples of characters who serve to reinforce moral values of both other characters, and the reader. These characters consistently choose to do the “right” thing in the face of severe adversity. For example, in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, the Samaritan man goes against all societal values to help the Jew after he had been left for dead by muggers. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch serves as a shining beacon of morality in the face of the prejudice-ridden early 20th century Alabama. Atticus helps to develop healthy and moral attitudes in his children by encouraging them to avoid unnecessary conflict, to always strive to be the better person, but also to still be prepared to accept a challenge if it is necessary for doing what is morally right, which demonstrates his truly moral character.…
“A Good Man is Hard to Find” is not one of those short stories you read and easily forget. It is a piece that stays with you long after you have read the last line. What makes it so hard to disregard is the fact that, once it’s over, the readers find themselves puzzled by their own thoughts on the ending, especially when you are trying to fit the story into a neat little box of happy or sad. I have never found myself searching so hard for that answer with any other story, but with the way that Flannery O’Connor masterfully shapes her characters and their appearance to us, it is hard in the end to decide whether or not we are truly sad for the deaths of all the characters.…
In Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” the grandmother and the Misfit become the main focus even though the other characters are involved in the story. Throughout the entire story, The Misfit is portrayed as the symbol of evil because he was in jail; he escaped from jail, and he committed murders. The grandmother believes to be greater than the people that she are around because of the “good” that she portrays. The conventional meaning of good, or possessing or displaying moral virtue, is not the particular good that the grandmother is trying to portray throughout the story. The grandmother believes that good is portrayal of a social class. Throughout the short story, O’Connor portrays “good” from a social class aspect rather than from the conventional aspect, through the grandmother.…
Throughout life, many amazing individuals enter and leave, each having impact and influence on each person they have been around. These people can teach others so much about events or problems that occur in everyday life by both their words and actions. Atticus Finch is one man who any person no matter their age, race, or background, can learn from. If the definition of a “good man” were looked up online, the computer would probably suggest to visit a site about Atticus Finch, a widowed lawyer with two kids, Jean Louis and Jem, from the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. After having read the novel and coming to learn about Atticus, his traits, and all that he does for his community and family, most people most likely have said to themselves, “Now that is the type of person I hope to be.”…
