One of the topics in the book that is true is that “The will to survive is driven by the ones you love.” This topic tie’s to the author of the book as he has had spent time around children who were struggling with their cancer along with their family and doctors desperately trying to support them. “His initial aim was to become an Episcopal priest. terminal-illness stimulated him to become a writer.“ "John Green." 2012. Famous Authors.org.
The story is slanted to the topic as the book talks about how multiple people were were trying to survive through cancer and family cancer issues.
Isaac’s struggles with blindness, Gus’ struggle with his bones, and Hazel's struggle with her lungs. These three people are struggling to even survive not just with themselves, but with people around them. They have one thing in common, however. They have family and friends to support them. Also, “The will to survive” doesn't just mean that you’re lungs are are breathing and your heart is pounding, it means why the person is living and how the person affect other people.
My thesis is without the ones you love, you would not survive. There are many definitions for surviving, but I feel like the definition that best suits the book is managing to keep going in difficult circumstance
Hazel (one of the main characters) would have most likely not been able to survive without their parents. They would not be able to get the support and confidence that they need. Hazel and Gus have very good relationships with their parents. This statement is proved all throughout the book when their parents cared for them and loved them to …show more content…
death.
First and foremost, if Hazel’s parents had not been there and would have ultimately died when she got diagnosed with cancer if she hadn't have gotten sent to the hospital by her parents. “I told Augustus the broad outline of my miracle: diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer when I was thirteen.” (Green 24) Stage IV cancer is a big problem for Hazel. However, with the help of her family and friends, she is finding that it is a much less stressful and painful experience giving her a reason to survive and that reason, again is because she still has her family and friends. Her “miracle” of her surviving has also made her stronger as she feels like she can survive no matter how hard she struggles.
The day before that Hazel went to Amsterdam, she had had an outburst where her lungs were filled with water. “I screamed to wake up my parents, and they burst into the room.”
“Dad drove, talking on the phone with the hospital, while I lay in the back with my head on moms lap.” (Green 105) This shows that if when she had an outburst and her parents were not there or her dad didn't drive her she would not have survived. There are many reasons why “The will to survive is driven by the ones you love.” is very important. Truthfully, Hazel’s parents were also a main character in the story. Her parents don’t just tie in with her surviving, but with her relationship with Gus.
In the beginning of the book, Hazel had major depression. Mom: “One of the symptoms of depression is disinterest in activities.” (Green 7) Another argument from the thesis is that Hazel would have not met Gus.
When she had depression, her Mom had decided to send her to a group called The support group, for her to talk and make friends with people who also have cancer. One day at the support group when the people there were all sitting at “The literal heart of Jesus,” Hazel had met Gus when he was staring at him. They later on then became boyfriend and girlfriend.
“I glanced again. He was still watching me.“ (Green 9) The main idea is that without Hazel’s parents, she would not have been able to meet with Gus. You could also say that Gus is part of the will of why Hazel is surviving and it is driven by her parents. They later go on an exciting trip together to Amsterdam.
Going to Amsterdam for them to see Peter Van Houten was a big part of the book as Hazel and Gus’ relationship has really increased.
Going to Amsterdam was not an easy task. Hazel could not use the wish from the cancer make a wish company, as she had spent her wish on Disneyland. Because she had done this, Gus had decided to spend his wish on them going to Amsterdam as he had not used his wish yet. There was one problem however. Hazel couldn't go as the doctors said that it was unsafe. Thankfully though, her parents have helped her and instead of going for six days to Amsterdam, they went for three days and Hazel would go with her Mom. Also, her dad couldn't go which made him emotional, as she is anxious for
her.
On the way to Amsterdam, Hazel’s parents help make sure that her breathing device is working so that she would be able to breath at high altitudes. While in Amsterdam, Hazel and Gus got dressed and her mother left them alone. This is because Hazel’s mom wants her to feel comfortable and make her forget about her cancer. During this trip, Hazel and Gus’ love for each other has been much better thanks to Hazel’s mom.
