I’m going to tell you about my favorite character. His name is Ivan. He’s a character in “If you could see me now”. This magical tale is third novel from the international bestselling author Cecelia Ahern, a lively and romantic novel about two lost souls who find each other in the most unexpected way. The novel was inspired by her fascination with children and their imaginary friends. And the imaginary friend here is Ivan.

Ivan is considered to be an "imaginary friend," but to himself and others like him, he is merely a normal person who walks, talks, lives, and breathes. He’s also simply in the business of making friends and guiding children during an important time in their lives. Having to leave the best friends was all part of his job. It isn’t a very nice part, but he believes in finding a positive side in everything, so the way he sees it is, if he didn’t have to leave his best friends, then he wouldn’t be able to make new ones. And making new friends is his favorite part by far. I love Ivan's attitude toward life. Though, he still gets a bit nervous about it. There is always that scary chances that people won’t like him and it gives him collywobbles. And that is tough wanting to be friends with someone who not wanting the same back.

As I said before, even since he started the job, parents have been calling him imaginary friend. And it’s really bother him. There’s nothing imaginary about him whatsoever. They just can’t see him. And they don’t like him so much. But he isn’t at all surprised because that’s usually way it goes. When his best friend invited him to lunch or dinner, the parents thought that making food for him was a waste because they always just ended up throwing it out. But it was trick for him, how did he try eating his meal while sitting squashed in a tiny place at the table while everyone looks at he and wonders the food is disappear or not. He eventually got paranoid that he couldn’t eat and had to leave the food on the plate.

Ivan Ilyich portrays the illusion of reality in his act. Many of the minor characters, especially the physicians, depicted the theme. As Ivan Ilyich was becoming sick, many of the doctors came to check on him. Ivan had a problem with these doctors because they dodged the fact that Ivan was going to die. Ivan saw right through these physicians knowing that they were clouding their diagnosis. Ivan's friends, too, became Tolstoy's target for illusion of reality. When they went to Ivan's funeral, they thought that they "should" or "have to" go and comfort the widow. Their real reasoning behind everything was to see who would take Ivan's position at work. Another example of illusion of reality occurs when Ivan is lying down in…

Art Spiegelman’s Maus expounds on the poignant story of Spiegelman’s father, Vladek, and his traumatic experience as a Polish Jew during the Holocaust in World War II. Vladek is a complex individual whose arduous past explains his difficult behaviour in the present. His son, Artie, renders him as a very meticulous, demanding, critical and anxious character. Vladek’s involvement in the Holocaust through his unwavering pursuit for survival is what makes him quite the tangled personality. His encounters with traumatic events such as death and loss of family members and friends from the war greatly explain his complexity. As readers, we are meant to sympathise with him and understand why his painful past is a notable reason for his convoluted character in the present.…

Throughout Ivan’s entire life all he seemed to live for were his material possessions and his status within the world he lived. Regardless of what life he had before his very eyes, he went about trying to live a life that didn’t belong to him. Because of this, He always blamed his wife for not being good to him, when in reality he was the one that was not truly being good to himself. He always seemed to go for what would impress the social order, rather than what would lead him to happiness. If Ivan would have gone with his own feelings in the first place, he probably would not have become a lawyer, and would not have ended up in the stressful job he had to deal with now. Actually this job by itself may have been the…

Throughout his life, Ivan was convinced that a successful life was measured by adapting to, and meeting, the expectations of the bourgeois society in which he lived. Tolstoy described the standards that the society expected one to adhere to as “proper” and “decorous”. Ivan pursued those standards with blind ignorance much “as a moth is to light” (44). Rather than looking to his inner self, developing his own set of values and living a moral life according to those values, Ivan lived a hollow life detached from emotional ties, always doing what he thought others would accept as being the right conduct. His interpersonal relationships, including his marriage, were perfunctory and served merely to advance his social status or promote his own agenda. As a result, the relationships were superficial, self-serving, and materialistic and towards the end of his life, resulted in Ivan being isolated, terrified and in great despair at a time when he needed compassion and true friendship the most. Ivan did not realize until his death was imminent that in order to live a fulfilled and right life, he should have shunned material things and superficial relationships, and instead, he should have embraced love, compassion, and spirituality throughout his…

I have discovered that many people live life similar to the way Ivan did. Individuals that live for status therefore living shallow lives with little or no meaning I have learned that life is short and that we only have one life to live. Each person should live each day for happiness and contentment as Gerasim did. Tolstoy ability to use imagery and point of view is masterful. This leads me to a better understanding of the position many individuals find themselves in. Ivan like many others lived his life for the acceptance of others and not his own…
