When Alexander was going towards Nysa, the people of Nysa sent out men: ‘o king, the people of Nysa want to remain free. Therefore save the independence of the people because of Dionysus. For the god was the founder of Nysa. For when he took victory over the Indians, he founded Nysa in order to leave a monument of the victory for future generations. In the same way you yourself also founded both the farthest Alexandria and another Alexandria in the land of the Egyptians, and many others: you have already founded some, in due course you will found others. We have always had freedom in Nysa, governing in order because of the independence. There is also a certain piece of evidence of Dionysus founding Nysa: for ivy does not flourish elsewhere in the land of the Indians but only here.’ Therefore having heard the words of the men Alexander ordered the ruler of Nysa to send four hundred of his best men as soldiers. But the ruler said, ‘We can’t govern Nysa in order if very many of the best soldiers are away. Therefore lead away instead of the four hundred best soldiers twice as many of the worst soldiers. Therefore in this way having returned you will find Nysa being in the same order.’

Alexander who was still a boy often read the Iliad. His nickname was ‘Achilles’. His teacher’s nickname was ‘Cheiron’, because the centaur trained Achilles. When the king was also a general, Alexander always had India with the dagger under the pillow. And he captured many prizes having routed the Persians in battle and a certain chest of Darius, which was valuable: and in the chest he guarded the Iliad. And when a certain excited messenger once ran in, Alexander said to him, ‘why why are you so excited? Is Homer alive again?’ for he envied Achilles because Homer sang about him. And a certain bad poet once said to Alexander, ‘I will write a poem about you, just like Homer about Achilles.’ But Alexander replied, ‘I want Thersites to be in the Iliad more than Agamemnon in

Alexander was born in 356 BC in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia. He was son of Philip II, King of Macedonia, and Olympias, the princess of neighbouring Epirus. He spent his childhood watching his father transforming Macedonia into a great military power, winning victory after victory on the battlefields throughout the Balkans. When he was 13, Philip hired the Greek philosopher Aristotle to be Alexander’s personal tutor. During the next three years of Alexander’s life Aristotle gave Alexander training in rhetoric and literature which stimulated his interest in science, medicine, and philosophy, all of which became of importance in Alexander’s later life. In 340 B.C., when Philip assembled a large Macedonian army and invaded Thrace, he left his 16 year old son with the power to rule Macedonia in his absence as regent, which shows that even at such young age Alexander was recognized as quite capable.…

Throughout the life of Alexander of Macedon as portrayed in works such as Arrian, Plutarch and Curtius the question of Alexander’s divinity has always been a prominent debate. Alexander believed that he may have been descended from the Greek warrior Achilles on hid father side and Heracles on his Mother’s. It has been argued by historians that Alexander used his alleged divinity to his advantage in both politics and warfare. However, Alexander’s belief in his own divinity did not arise out of an ideological vacuum and in his age and area there was a religious climate that fostered such ideas. Nevertheless, there is strong evidence that by Alexander believing and promoting his divinity that he was granted great respect by both his friends and his enemies. The Persian army quickly became very demoralised and fearful when they learned that they were facing an army led by a God, if this were a part of Alexander’s tactics it was definitely an extremely beneficial tactic. Arrian is at times sceptical of Alexander’s belief in his own divinity but has no doubt that even if Alexander never intended to promote his own Legend it was a pivotal reason for Alexander’s successes in Persia.…

In the Iliad, Homer targets the audience of Greek upper class men in order to spread some cultural propaganda to the nation. Homer captures audiences by using the hero of Achilles to show men what they should aim to be, and to show women what they should be looking for in a man. After the Dark Ages, Homer aims to bring some positive light to the Greeks with his “Epic Heroes”, which leads to inspire more than just the Greek men of this time frame. Homer uses his words to encourage strength, creating what is known as the Greek Heroic Age, dating from 1200 to 750 BC. The Iliad becomes known as the warrior code of personal honor and glory, demonstrating the culture and the qualities Greek men should strive to achieve. Achilles, the epic’s hero, is an elegant gentleman who knows his destiny in life is to battle. Achilles makes it a strong point that the aim of every hero is to achieve honor, even if this honor is only reached in death. Achilles knows that he has two fates: to either live a long life with no fame attributed to him, or to die as a well-known warrior across his land. Achilles demonstrates to the male audience that honor can only sometimes be reached in battling to the death, an honor that is well worth sacrificing your life. In the Iliad, Achilles states, “Man, supposing you and…

The battlefield is the only home a warrior hero knows, his shield and spear the only instruments for achieving all aims. A hero is driven through suffering to earn the honor and glory of immortal status within a community from which he is inevitably detached. At the beginning of Homer’s The Iliad, Achilles embodies the “ideal” hero in his past accomplishments and renowned fame as the greatest of all Achaeans. What Achilles yet lacks, and what he struggles with throughout the epic, is the balance of wisdom to compliment his unmatched skills in battle. Achilles’ internal battle with rage, excessive pride, and self-righteousness causes him to appear far less heroic, if not merciless and cruel, in the eyes of his companions and some gods. Recognizing that these flaws bring enmity instead of fame, Achilles learns to gradually regain respect and admiration lost at the start of Book 1. Through a series of trials and error, starting with his decision to abandon the Achaean forces and ending with his final encounter with King Priam, Achilles finds a balance between his strengths and faults and ultimately discovers a path towards the glorious status of immortality by the end of the epic.…

Gorbachev was a leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from 1985 to 1991. He instituted a range of reforms that led to the end of the Cold War and oversaw the transition of U.S.-Soviet relations from enemies to partners in the international system. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was born near Stavropol and earned a degree in law from Moscow State University in 1952. As a youth, he was an active supporter of the Communist Party, and he joined the party after college. His first significant appointment was as the first secretary of the Communist Youth League in Stavropol (1955-1958). Gorbachev went on to serve in a variety of government positions. He became a member of the Central Committee in 1971 and the Politburo in 1979. In the Politburo, he attracted the attention of Soviet leader Yuri Andropov. The premier tasked Gorbachev to help reform the senior ranks of the Soviet administration. One result was that many leadership positions were filled by appointees with ties to Gorbachev. This was especially important following the death of Soviet leader Konstantin Chernenko, when Gorbachev was selected to be general secretary of the Communist Party and, consequently, premier of the Soviet Union.…
