Hook:
“Unless and until our society recognizes cyber bullying for what it is, the suffering of thousands of silent victims will continue.” - Anna Maria Chavez
Purpose:
The so-called “school bully” of today doesn’t just punch, kick and scream malicious words at the innocent, wide-eyed student anymore. Cyber bullying has become a large part of today’s society becoming a national epidemic of how easy it is for a cyber bully to access their vicitims.
Thesis:
The federal government should create laws against cyber bulling for
A: Cyber bullying lowers self-esteem,
B: causes poor grades, and
C: causes health issues within victims.
A:
Causes Mental Health Issues:
Extreme Stress: Cyber bullying as opposed to normal bullying contains a supposed “secret weapon” for cyber bullies: a wall separating the bully and the victim, sometimes even a barrier, which is anonymous. When one is being Cyber-bullied it is much easier for the bully to say absolutely anything they can think of for they don't have to say it to the victims face. It’s over the Internet. This also makes it much easier to find other ways to bully the victim like posting embarrassing photos or creating negative polls than just the typical punch and name calling in the schoolyard. This cyber bullying epidemic allows for much more of a range in ways to bully the victim and makes it easier for the bully to do so therefore causes more of a strain on the victim because they know that the bully is harder to confine and stop.
PROOF:
Lowers Self Esteem:
PROOF:
Initiates Other Mental Illnesses:

2.
About 1 in every 10 students drops out, does not attend, or changes schools because of fear and extremely low self-confidence due to repeated cyber bullying.
37% of students from the ages of 10-18 years old reported being cyber bullied sometime within the last year and 11% of that reported being cyber bullied almost daily.
^(Stats and Facts “method of development”) (source:website)
^^Due to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
It’s commonly known that roughly between the ages of 10-18 (therefore adolescence) there are a lot of changes. A person’s identity, personality and perceptions of themselves and others form more maturely and thoroughly.
These formations and realizations depend a significant amount on experiences and social cues from others and from the social environment.
^Therefore the way one is treated over social media is hugely impacted upon their personality and overall self-esteem and confidence.
According to Dr. Shanheen Shariff of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council for Canada: being bullied in any way can throw off the hormones of any
teen.
This is especially directed to Cyber bullying as opposed to bullying in general for cyber bullying contains a supposed “secret weapon” for cyber bullies: a wall separating the bully and the victim, sometimes even a barrier which is anonymous. When one is being Cyber-bullied it is much easier for the bully to say absolutely anything their appalling minds can think of for they don't have to say it to the victims face.
With this greater emotional strain it causes the bodily hormones to be even more dysfunctional than just a bullied teen and definitely than a normal teen’s already would be. Leading to a disconnection with the brain. It also causes impairment in the brain and in the neurons of the brain creating neurological scars.
These neurological scars create a deformity in a part of the brain (the corpus callosum), which is vital to communicating between the two hemispheres of the brain processing memory, impulsivity frequencies, chronic feelings and stress related thinking and reflections between the two halves. Therefore this distortion causes for a decline in these abilities causing one bullied to be more emotionally unstable and insecure. These deformities have been proven scientifically to lead to depression, anxiety, paranoia and other mental illnesses all associated with a decline in self-esteem levels.
Therefore: The changes in hormone levels caused by cyber bullying especially, lead to brain deficiencies causing low self esteem and therefore mental illnesses associated with low self esteem and a reduce in confidence. To be a happy and healthy person a mid to high self-esteem is necessary therefore if that isn’t possible because of bullying’s effects on the brain a law should be created against it so it won’t happen.
B:
Decreased academic achievement—GPA and standardized test scores—and school participation. They are more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school.
“The students who were rated the most-bullied performed substantially worse academically than their peers.”
“Cyber-bullied student poorly engaged academically, including whether they were participating in class discussions, showing interest in class and completing their homework.”
"Instruction cannot be effective unless the students are ready to learn, and that includes not being fearful of raising your hand in class and speaking up,"
^^^Jaana Juvonen from Victims of bullying suffer academically as well, UCLA psychologists report (August 19, 2010)
^ (reference to authority-method of development) (source:article)
Bullying can even happen silently in class through phones
Students who are repeatedly bullied receive poorer grades and participate less in class discussions. May be thought of a low achievers because they do not want to speak up in class for fear of getting bullied.
"If the academically low-performing students are at higher risk for getting bullied, that suggests one way to reduce bullying is to help those students academically," she added. "Once they get into the cycle of being bullied because of their poor academic performance, their chances of doing better academically are worse."
^ Therefore: law should be created so this can be prevented, every student should have the opportunity to excel but when being cyber bullied it makes it much harder to concentrate with so many other things on the mind and therefore causes a decline in grades.
C:
Not only mental health issues but more physical health issues
