Female Factory Worker Dbq Essay
Most people work from their late teens into their 60's, saving for life's needs. Imagine working your whole life, just to die poor. This happened to female workers in the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution was a period of major industrialization that took place during the late 1700s and early 1800s, and in the 1880's, this movement spread to Japan. Did the cost of working in silk factories outweigh the benefits of being a worker in the industry? For the female silk workers of Japan, the factory experience contained more costs than benefits. Women workers not only lived their life's poor, they also were overworked, underpaid, and were taken advantage of. Being overworked was one cost of working in silk factories. Back in the late 1800's, it was easy for a girl to be taken advantage of, especially in the work industry. For this and other reasons, factories hired a majority of females to work there, or in percentages, 8% of workers were men and 92% of workers were women (Doc. A). Out of this 92% of women workers, almost half of them were between the ages of 15 to 20 years old, or 48% of them (Doc. A). Even worse, 18% of female workers were 14 and under (Doc. A). In document F, it shows a survey of 518 older women who used to work at silk factories in their youth (Doc. F). The worst ranked item was inspections, which were periodic inspections of working performance carried out by plant managers (Doc. F). The document even says that the managers, who were usually men, were sometimes even physically abusive to workers (Doc. F). Being taken advantage of was more of a cost than a benefit because women were able to be paid less and couldn't say anything about it. Some women were also abused in factories. Many young girls were hired not only because of their spunk, but they were easier to manage and control. One can also see that Japanese female workers worked much more than those in England. They worked ninety one hours with short breaks and no weekends.     There is a chart (Doc 7) that compares the amount of female cotton textile workers in Japan and India. It shows that over three-fourths were women in Japan, and less than one-fourth of Indian laborers were women. Another way this document helps show the difference of workers between Japanese and Indian textile factories is that in Japan the percent of women workers slightly increases over the years 1920-1930. In India, the percent of female workers from 1909-1934 decreases, meaning women didn’t work as much in factories. Because India was so patriarchal the women’s job was to stay home and take care of the house. Document 4 is a written concern about how there are many women working in Japanese textile mills. Documents 8 and 10 both consist of a picture from a Japanese cotton mill (Doc 8), and an Indian textile mill (Doc 10).
