Feminist Criticism Of Halloween
Ironically the movies that were critiqued fall under the horror, action, and fantasy genres however, the resulting criticism opposes their purpose in which they fall respectively under feminist, queer, and Marxist criticism. Halloween being nationally recognized as a spooky day was the perfect setting for a woman to establish her equality. Likewise, an action film was critiqued as being the perfect setting to establish an LGBT presence as opposed to the drama stereotype and fantasy was viewed to be best explained through an economic and anti-oppressive standpoint.
Halloween the movie is mostly recognized by the main character Michael Myers however, the video critique was praised not for the main character but for the woman who was supposed to be the victim that turned out to be a hero. The clip shows the woman first comforting her kids and then protecting herself in an intuitive way. Through this depiction the critics then establish the connection in which they describe women as “independent, intelligent, spunky, and interesting people” as opposed to the stereotypical role of shallow, needy, sexual objects we are used to seeing. Therefore the criticism used in the video can best be defined as being a feminist criticism when compared to The Norton Introduction to Literature

The video first began to describe the masculinity of the warriors through their physicality only to emphasize its concluding message which stated the movie was “full of homoerotic undertones.” According to The Norton Introduction to Literature, the queer theory “likes to discover resistance to heterosexuality in unexpected places.” Therefore, by creating a sexual attraction between warriors who are a physical representation of seclusion to others, the criticism can be clearly identified as a representation of the queer

    Gender roles have been a theme for many films throughout time. One movie that particularly challenges the idea of gender roles in the horror genre is that of Halloween (1978). In many horror films, women are depicted as weak and rather ignorant victims of the killer that is coming to attack. That is very different from how Halloween depicts the heroine of the story.
