India is the country of Festivals. Diwali is one of the most important Hindu festivals of India. It is a festival of joy, happiness, brightness and splendour. Diwali literally means ‘row of lights’. The real meaning is to lead us into truth and light. In India everyone celebrates this festival in different traditions but the theme behind is same throughout “Good conquering Evil”. All the rituals have a story behind them. The best thing of the festival is the family gatherings, sweets, crackers, lighting the lamps in the evening and a lot more. Though it is a very joyous and colourful festival it is also a festival of tragedy as there are many accidents caused due to irresponsible playing and experimenting with firecrackers. Mostly it is the children who face accidents due to ignorance and negligence. Along with themselves they harm our surroundings by air and sound pollution. The garbage caused by crackers is a major problem. Every year we can see hundreds of cases of unfortunate accidents caused by crackers. For children Diwali means new clothes, lots of sweets and bursting of crackers. But they should know that for their enjoyment, children of their age are making those crackers. I feel very sad to say but we are promoting child labour just for the sake of our enjoyment. We are not only creating problems for human beings and the environment but also for the animals, who get scared due to the sound of the crackers. There are times when animals even die due to fear. There are many precautionary measures for a safe Diwali published in the newspapers, but as the day arrives everyone forgets those and burst crackers in an irresponsible way. So, people must be taught the real meaning of Diwali and children should now, itself be cautioned about all the problems so that within a few years we will be able to celebrate a safe and eco-friendly Diwali.
