Ffpa Case Study Of Andy
FAFSA does not reflect that my 33 year old brother, Andy is dependent on my parents and will always need an adult caregiver in his life. He was born three months premature and wasn't able to fully develop. When he was born he weighed less than two pounds. He was also going through retinal detachment. This is where the retina pull away from critical tissue in the back of the eye. This is significant because within the retina there are receptors that absorb light which send visuals to the brain. When the eyes lose the retina the ability to see is lost as well. My brother went under an experimental surgery with a slim chance to reattach his retina. The surgery was not successful, as a result Andy is blind and my parents would later find out that
he would also be mute.
Andy lives with my parents so they are his primary caregivers and are financially responsible for him. Being a caregiver is not always easy emotionally or financially because people with disabilities face more obstacles in life. For example, there is not one dentist in my town that will clean my brother's teeth. The closest place we can go is nearly two hours away and my parents don't have even have dental insurance. Luckily, we have health insurance, because Andy is prone to skin infections and uses eye ointment daily. That's the thing about being a caregiver/parent/sibling is that you are able to provide comfort and dignity no matter what the cost.
