Field Work Experience
I had the pleasure of interviewing Lisa Korn, the Educational Director of Playhouse Cooperative Preschool. Lisa was first involved with Playhouse when her children attended the school. She credited Playhouse and Jeanine Ginsberg for educating her and influencing her parenting style. When Lisa was a “Playhouse Parent” she was always very involved with the school. She would frequently visit the school to help whenever help was needed and she would often sign up to co-op in the classrooms her children were enrolled in. When her children left Playhouse to move onto Elementary school, she did not want to leave the environment of Playhouse. Lisa decided to run to be on the advisory board and also substituted in the school for about two years after …show more content…
I started off at Rutgers thinking that I wanted to become a child psychologist. Once I started to take education courses for my minor, I changed my plan. After my fieldwork experience in Introduction to Education, I knew that I wanted to be in the classroom. Unfortunately, I did not decide on this until the middle of junior year, where I felt like it was to late to transfer schools. I decided that I would finish up my bachelors degree at Rutgers and would apply for a Masters of Science in Education my senior year. A couple of months ago, I was accepted into three schools in New York that would lead me to become initially certified in first grade through sixth grade special and general education. Being an intern at Playhouse has solidified that I want to pursue a career in education. I enjoy working with children and watching the children learn, grow, and develop. Eventually, I wish to pursue certification in educational leadership and continue on to a doctorate degree. Ultimately, I want to become a principal of an elementary school, but it would be a long process before I would be qualified to work in that position. Speaking with Lisa helped me to realize that if you are happily committed to your field, opportunities will arise and you will feel rewarded. In the worst case scenario, I will continue my education past my master’s degree, begin a job as a principal, dislike it, and continue teaching in the

I recently left a position at a small Early Childhood Education center in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school consisted of children ranging in age of 6 weeks to 6 years. I worked there for eleven years in a variety of age groups. Most of my experience was in Preschool, with children who were three and four years old. The school was located in Point Park University located in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, in one of the University’s dorm buildings and took up two floors. Each classroom was between three and four dorm rooms combined in size. The rooms were long and narrow with partial walls knocked down and converted into doorways between the rooms. Because of the classrooms being converted from individual dorm rooms to single classrooms, there were many blind spots in the room. There for, each classroom had at least two teachers spread out among the room to be able to see every child and what they were doing at all times. It was very rare that there were only two teachers per class. Many times, the classroom had two teachers, and students from the university enrolled in a work study program helping to work with fifteen to twenty students.…

As a teacher of young children I am aware of the need to involve parents in child’s educational and developmental process. Each parent is an expert and a valuable partner when it comes to identifying and meeting their child’s needs. As I reflect on my teaching practices, I make sure tha I provide a variety of opportunities for parents as well as family members to participate in activities and experiences planned for their child. By valuing parents’ involvement in the total education of their children, it shows my competence in meeting Standard IV.…

On Wednesday July 2nd, 2014 I visited Wiley Mildred Family Day care center to observe a group of children that I have never met at a house I have never been to. Throughout my hour that I spent at Wiley Mildred I observed a group of children interacting with each other as well as the caregivers as they were having their outside privileges. As I conducted my observation I studied children’s actions and noticed the practicing of the Sociocultural Theory, the Social Learning Theory, the Cognitive Theory, and the Psychoanalytic Theory. All these theories were able to be observed through actions this is due to their environment around them and the activities they were engaged in. The observation taught me how significant an action can be for a developing child and how important it is for a child in a care center to be mentally and physically stimulated.…

My professional goal is to become a teacher with hard work and dedication I know I can reach my lifetime goal. For my extra-curricular activities, I have attended the Head Start at Brookhaven Community College where I have volunteered over thirty hours in a semester to get myself prepared for the profession. Going to the local Head Start gave me the opportunity to see if this is really what I want to do for many years. I put myself in a position where I actually enjoyed what I was doing, I had patience which a lot of people don’t have to teach younger kids. I worked with three to five years old, I had to show them I was the leader. In my four years of High School, I have taken my time out to be a leader in my school. I was vice-president freshman…

To promote involvement and positive relationships with families and communities I believe that an open door policy is essential to have. I would do this by talking with the parents every day at drop off and pick up time. During the morning drop off time I would be able to find out how the previous afternoon went, if I wasn't there to see it myself, and how the child slept the previous night. I could also find out whether or not the child ate breakfast. During afternoon pick up time I would be able to tell the parent how the child's day went. I would also keep daily sheets for each child that would include bathroom breaks, what and how much the child ate throughout the day, as well as any concerns or questions I might have about the child. Another way I would keep the open door policy is by sending home a weekly newsletter informing the parents of what would be going on that week in the classroom. I would encourage parents to call the center or stop by to see how things are going for the child. I know that when parents are working they, often times, wonder about the child's day. By calling or stopping by they are able to peek in on the child and get updates are how the day is going. I would also encourage parents to attend any special event that the child is apart of, such as Christmas programs. The parents would, also, be more than welcome to have lunch with the child on his or her birthday if they are available to do so. I believe that, as a teacher, it is important to be the support system for the child while he or she is at school and while the parents are away at work. If the parents are working on something, such as using manners or potty training, I would be more than willing to help them by reinforcing that task while the child is at school. It is very important for both the child and the parents to have consistency in their daily routine. I believe that by…

The experience that had a big impact on my life is going to medical camp. The medical camp was held at our local hospital. The camp allowed me to tour the hospital and speak to workers in various positions throughout the hospital. To get into the program I had to write an essay and have a GPA of 3.5 or better. At camp I was the youngest and the only African American there. While there it opened up my eyes to many other jobs in the hospital that interested me. Prior to going I wanted to be a Pediatrician, but while attending I found two other professions that interest me. The first profession is Occupational Therapy. Occupational Therapy is for people who go through surgery or get into an accident and try to relearn activities of daily living…

I believe that every child is a uniquely special individual who must be provided with a secure, caring, and stimulating environment in which to grow and mature cognitively, emotionally, physically, and socially. It is my desire as a future educator to help children reach optimal results in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are three fundamental elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment:…

At the time, I began my undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign it was my aspiration to become an early elementary teacher. However, in the middle of my sophomore year of my undergraduate studies, my ambition of being a schoolteacher changed. After taking and enjoying many psychology courses, I became enthralled by the discipline. I wanted to pursue careers in the fields of psychology and education. My interests in psychology and my passion for working with children in an educational setting are one of the many reasons I took an interest in the career of a school psychologist.…

I set up an appointment with the Kids Club daycare at 9:45 am on November 4th to observe for an hour of toddler classroom who were between three and four years old. The principle gave me a warm greeting and took me to the class and introduced me to the teachers and the children. Everyone there made me feel welcomed. I chose a place where I can sit, observe and write my note as well as to be away from children's sight. In the classroom there were five boys, two girls, and two teachers Ms. Nadia and Ms. Emma. The classroom itself was large and spacious. The classroom is very appropriate for children this age and it has many interesting areas such as a blocks and art area, and children taped some of their previous work in the art area. The color of the class is bright and has interesting posters like calendars with the name of children’s birthdays. Also. There is a toys area that has toys suitable for both boys and girls like cars, animals, and doll. There is a reading area with a little amount of children’s books and stories in reachable…

No matter how little time a parent may appear to have they must make the effort to be involved in their child’s center activities. I sometimes feel the pressure of being involved in my children’s education; so I can see why some parents are not. It is not easy to balance work, home life, and your child’s center activities, but it is tremendously worth it. Many of the parents that do not participate always use work as an excuse. The center has tried to accommodate these parents by holding meetings and activities in the evening after the scheduled pick up time, yet parents still fail to show up. Being involved in my child’s education allows me to communicate on a regular basis with my child’s teacher to let me know how she is progressing, and if there is anything that she may need help with. I believe that participation on the parents end also gives the child motivation to excel.…

I had the opportunity to observe at the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center in Long Beach. The children I observed where around the ages of three to five. During my observation there was twenty-eight children and five teachers present. The building was all wooden on the inside and at the entrance there was a welcome wall colored with a rainbow. There were art projects hanged on the walls as well as learning material. When examining early childhood programs there are many similarities and differences across the board. After observing both programs, I noticed that both schools have benefited from tailoring the services and programs provided to their communities. It helps early childhood programs become more effective at reaching their students. These two programs focus on providing services to two different communities of families, however, they both have the same goals in preparing students for formal schooling.…
