And other figurative language 2 different ways. The way the author uses dark words to create suspense is by making it seem like the character is alone. The author gives some sort of characteristic to the darkness (Personification) so that it makes it seem like the darkness is taking him away. For example, “The darkness engulfed him,” (Line 3) this seems like the darkness has swallowed the character in the story The other way the author uses suspense, is by creating a setting with light in the excerpt. The author does this by using words that make the reader feel like they have never seen daylight until that very moment, for example, “Powerful beacons that filled the platform with their radiance as they guided.” (Line 23-24) In lines 28 and 29 it states, “ Now darkness had consumed the light,” this use of personification creates a better mood of suspense for the time being in the excerpt. In the lighthouse, it is now completely dark and I can infer that because Patricia Bray uses the darkness as an object to take away the light.
