November 29, 2010 Gordie Howe and how he contributed to the shaping of Canada’s identity In the history of hockey Gordie Howe was not only one of the greatest players to ever hit the ice he was literally a game changer. On and off the ice it was easy to tell from his early playing days in the USHL that Gordie was special. Gordie Howe possessed skills never seen by any hockey player before and rarely seen since. Howe would very quickly evolve, later being signed by the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings in 1946. Over the next 33 years Gordie Howe was in the game of pro hockey (NHL or WHA). He set numerous records over the years such as most goals ever scored in NHL history at 801 (since surpassed by Wayne Gretzky) and most NHL games ever played. Gordie Howe’s impact on the games will be remembered forever. For being able to change the way hockey was played Gordie Howe was able to evolve and shape the game of hockey over the 33 years in which he played is how Gordie Howe has contributed to the shaping of Canada’s identity.

An example of this was that Gordie Howe was 6 feet tall by his early teens.(2) Many doctors Howe encountered feared that he had a calcium deficiency and encouraged him to strengthen his spine with chin-ups on a daily basis. Even with this slight physical setback Howe began playing organized hockey in Saskatchewan at the age of eight thus beginning the legend of Gordie “Mr. Hockey” Howe. (3)

Fans of the NHL, both in 1946 and in 2013, often have a favourite team. One of the biggest deciding factors when people pick their favourite team is location. It just makes sense to pick the team that is nearest your hometown. This is for two reasons. Number one, all the news, media coverage, game coverage and general excitement about that team is going to be biggest in the near vicinity of the team. Number two, all the other people in the town, whether its family or friends are more than likely also going to be cheering for the hometown team. Therefore, the boys in this story are compelled to go for the Montreal Canadians. The star of that team is Maurice “the Rocket” Richard, a French Canadian just like themselves. Who better to relate with and to idolize then the best player on the team who happens to be of…

Throughout Garnets time back home many events have had an effect on understanding who he really is but the hockey game as an event really showed this helping of Garnet to understand who he really is. First of all, the hockey helps in Garnets understanding of himself by letting himself relax and have fun for one of the first times since coming back home. As Garnet and Jackie both played in the hockey game they obviously were both having much fun yelling things like “Oooooo-hoo-hoo-hoo!” (Wagamese 153) and “Nice shot!” (Wagamese 153), showing the help of being relaxed and having fun in finding Garnets true self. Secondly, another way the hockey game helped Garnet find his true self is the way it connected him with his estranged brother Jackie.…

The first person I interviewed was German Glosslin a 37 year old born and raised Canadian. Harris says " I love the speed of the sport. Not just of the players, but how fast things change. I realized that you have to be constantly on your toes. Also, unlike like basketball, football and soccer, I find hockey requires abilities and skills. There's no other sport that you have to skate or use a stick. Everyone is born with the natural ability to throw or kick, but hockey skills are learned." He also says that hockey is very popular in Canada. He plays whenever he gets the chance.…

People would say ‘Girls don’t play hockey. Girls don’t skate.’ I would say ‘watch this’. This quote was stated by the first women to play full-time professional hockey in a position other than goalie, Hailey Wickenheiser. This extremely talented female went against all the odds and came out on top. How awesome is that?? If you ask me, a fellow female hockey player, I’d say it’s pretty incredible. I have been playing competitive hockey for the past 14 years of my life. Growing up playing a male dominate sport has impacted my life tremendously and in so many ways has helped form me into the person I am today. Fighting the never ending battle to be accepted and respected in a man’s sport, developing the thoughts and emotions of a man, and the impact it has made on mine and my father’s relationship over the years are only a few areas in my life that hockey has impacted.…

Playing Ice Hockey was a burning passion of mine. It all started in the cold and dense locker room. Practice had just finished up and we were inside the locker room getting undressed. I was a forward on the team and was only ten years old. The team goalie was sick and was not going to be able to make our game the next day. Coach asked “Is anyone willing to play goalie for our game?” and I, the young ten year old boy I was; was the first person to quickly respond saying “I will!” Playing goalie was destined for me, I was a star and very talented.…

The thrill of scoring a winning goal, the sound of skates being sharpened. The fresh tape job you put on your stick before every game. The moments you share with your teammates that will last a life time. The road trips, games on back to back nights and the lack of sleep due to games finishing late. The crunch noise your body makes when you hit the boards leading to sometimes broken ribs, separated shoulders, concussions and broken legs. Nothing can compare to scoring a game winning goal to a hockey player is like winning the lottery. Players go through tough practices skating until they feel like puking, the preparation done before every one of the 82 games played just to try and salvage enough points to make it into the playoffs. Then you have to go through as many as 28 more terrific grueling games. In the end it all becomes worth it because two lucky teams get a chance to compete for one of the…
