It is also a political film that highlights Morocco during the Second World War. Casablanca was produced by Warner Brothers and directed by Michael Curtiz one of Hollywood’s most creative and brilliant directors in that period. Casablanca has the perfect combination of intrigue, suspense, romance, and drama that captivates the audience from beginning to end. This is because of the combination of special characters in the film.
Casablanca’s characters are unique, memorable, and most of all relatable. The lead male, Rick Blaine, is played by Humphrey Bogart. Rick is a tough, cynical, ex-freedom fighter who owns a Saloon called Cafe Americain. In a chain of events he transforms to a sentimental gentleman who sacrifices his own happiness. Ilsa Laszlo, Rick’s former lover and female lead, is played by the young, beautiful, and talented Ingrid Bergman. Ilsa jilted Rick in the past but returned to haunt him with memories and her perpetual beauty. Throughout the film it seemed she never got over her love for him. The opening scene in this movie has the same effect on the viewers as ‘Cache’, anxiety and discomfort. Immediately, we see a man who appears to be a prisoner of the French military. They order him to put on one of their uniforms and to expose Ali La Pointe’s hideout spot. The man refuses and tries escaping, but gets hit. This sets the tone for the rest of the movie, as it is obvious that there will be a confliction between the French military and Algerian citizens. In the next scene, we see the commander speaking to several people hiding inside a wall, and that is where we meet Ali La Pointe. He is asked to come out from behind the wall, weaponless, and to surrender. A couple minutes later, we see Ali’s attempt at escaping the police, which was almost successful until he gets tripped by a young Frenchman. Rather than picking himself up to avoid arrest, Ali resorts to violence and headbutts this young man. His actions create chaos in the streets, and many people get involved. Again, unnecessary and avoidable conflict. The rest of the scene lists all of Ali’s criminal past, and we learn that he is a violent person based off his record. A few minutes later, we see one of Ali’s fellow Algerians violently getting beheaded. This type of terror is seen throughout the entire…

The serious and heavy opening music suggests that the events of the film are serious, that serious issues are at stake. In the opening narration freedom is seen as desirable, and the “Americas” seen as somewhere it can be found, a desirable destination for those who wish to escape. The footage of the fleeing refugees elicits our sympathy for them – the innocent victims of the war. After the French Resistance agent is shot the camera points upward respectfully at the words “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” at the entrance to a building, the Palais de Justice, suggesting that these are the values we should aspire to. There is a sense of hope in the people looking up at the plane, especially the…

"Lights! Camera! Action!" the dramatic yet traditional prompt associated with Hollywood and the pictures. Hollywood appears to be this extraordinary glamorous world; however, in reality is it? Many people dream of being in the limelight of Hollywood; where there is an endless amount of money, power, and fame. Billy Wilder explores and divulges the dark yet unknown, harsh realities of fame, following Hollywood's transition from silent pictures to talkies; with his film Sunset Boulevard.…

Casablanca is a classic Hollywood movie where the setting is in French unoccupied Casablanca of 1940’s World War II era. The good portion of the movie has a love story theme centered on two people whose names are Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund. In the movie, Rick is the owner of Rick’s Americana bar and there his predictability is minimal as it can keep the audience guessing on his nature. He did play the part of the hero but kind of hard to notice his heroic nature in the beginning because it is hidden behind his mask of nonchalance and strength. Ilsa Lund is Rick’s former lover only by fate. She can be characterized as a simple lady who probably grew up in a small village Oslo and later met Victor who showed her the way of the world probably through his speeches and sharing his life and past accomplishments with her and is later torn in a love triangle with the two men. She thought her husband Victor Lazlo had died during his hiding from the German Gestapo in Czechoslovakia, therefore to avoid the loneliness she found her way into Rick’s arms and were happy together. Later she found out her husband was not dead and recovered somewhere outside Paris. When the Germans were matching into Paris, Ilsa decided she could not leave with Rick and went in search for her husband. Rick was crushed that Ilsa did not show up at the train station to leave with him and Sam, the piano player and he did not know the real reason for it and therefore left with a mystery and broken heart.…

The film styles of Casablanca and It Happened One Night were completely different from that of Citizen Kane and The Best Years of Our Lives. Casablanca and the earlier films were all shot with very basic techniques where the frame just focused on the action. However, in Citizen Kane and The Best Years of Our Lives everything was in focus in the frame, even the events taking place in the background. Rather than just one main conversation or action being the concentration point of the film, there were things taking place in different layers of the frame, including the background. The Best Years of Our Lives is a series of long takes, unlike the other movies we watched where there was a lot of back and forth filming. My favorite technique they…
