Casablanca Movie Review

The film Casablanca has been a favorite for many people since its release in 1943. It was directed by the talented Hungarian director Michael Curtiz. It stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman as the main characters. Claude Rains plays a supporting role as Captain Louis Renault. He delivers one of the best performances of his impressive career during the course of this movie Casablanca is a classic tale of lost love found again. This love is then put at risk of being lost once and for all.

The Second World War is in full swing, and the Nazis have dominated Europe. Many refugees have fled and passed through Casablanca, Morocco. Rick Blaine (Bogart) is the hero, and his lost love is the beautiful Ilsa (Bergman). Rick is stubborn, and he stays in Casablanca. Ilsa and her husband are on the run when they stumble upon Rick’s Café. Rick has managed to build a new life to avoid being hurt again. Ilsa has buried their past, and she devotes her time to supporting her husband. When the two see each other sparks fly, and memories of their time in Paris come flooding back.

Casablanca is a film for anyone who has lost a love. It is for anyone who has ever had a heartbreaking decision to make. The themes of valor, sacrifice, and heroism still ring true today. The dialogue has lost none if its wit or depth. This is a must see for anyone who appreciates the art of

    The movie Lincoln, directed by the infamous Steven Spielberg, is based on the life of Abraham Lincoln and his efforts to pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which would abolish slavery completely. With the assumption that the Civil War would end in one month, however, Abraham feels it it is imperative to pass the amendment by the end of January, thus removing any possibility that slaves who have already been freed may be re-enslaved.     Casablanca is a classic Hollywood movie where the setting is in French unoccupied Casablanca of 1940’s World War II era. The good portion of the movie has a love story theme centered on two people whose names are Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund. She thought her husband Victor Lazlo had died during his hiding from the German Gestapo in Czechoslovakia, therefore to avoid the loneliness she found her way into Rick’s arms and were happy together. Later she found out her husband was not dead and recovered somewhere outside Paris. When the Germans were matching into Paris, Ilsa decided she could not leave with Rick and went in search for her husband. Rick was crushed that Ilsa did not show up at the train station to leave with him and Sam, the piano player and he did not know the real reason for it and therefore left with a mystery and broken heart.…

    War/Politics: The main backdrop to this story is that of war and politics. There are many war stories but Curtiz chooses the unusual setting of Casablanca – it’s a cultural and political melting pot that provides a richly textured cultural context in which the characters can interact. Much of this is explained in the opening scene (see section on Key Scenes below). Several cultures co-exist or are represented – the locals in Casablanca (the traders especially), the Americans, like Rick (America seen as the desirable culture to escape to); the Vichy French (those like Renault co-operating with the Germans), the resistance fighters (e.g. the man shot in the streets at the start and the Norwegian man who meets Laszlo in Rick’s); the Germans, not quite in full control here but very powerful; the Italian soldier ignored at the airport when the Nazis arrive; other Europeans (like Laszlo, Ilsa, the pickpocket, the “usual suspects”). We see all the usual intrigues of war – shooting in the street, escaped prisoners, people on the run, murder, bribery, fraternising with the enemy (Yvonne), narrow escapes, black market, secret meetings (Laszlo and the waiter from Rick’s go to one). There’s also the cultural context of Paris in the flashback – focus on the invasion/occupation. Laszlo’s political work is seen as important by all – even the German’s, who fear his influence. This is demonstrated in Rick’s with the battle of the songs. Some of the war context is conveyed by stock footage of refugees and the Germany army heading for Paris.…
