The purpose of an establishing shot is to show a setting. So in the beginning, the established shot was the town and also where Edward lived. It showed the whole mansion and then all of the houses in the town. In the very beginning, they showed Edward looking at the town through the window. First it would show his face by the window and them the houses during the night. This example implies that the director wanted us to see what Edward saw and how the town looked like from the mansion. This is similar to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when they showed the factory and the delivery trucks.
