I’m a Writer

When I first made the decision to go back to school I had two overwhelming fears. The first was my fear of public speaking, the other, and most prominent one, was the fact that I would have to write essays, research papers, and the like. I didn’t even accomplish this successfully over twenty years ago in high school, let alone at a college level! I made the decision that neither writing, nor any other obstacle, was going to stand in my way of accomplishing my goal of a college education. The only way for me to accomplish writing essays successfully was to just dive in and do it. My mind was put to ease during the first week of class when Professor Allen said “Anyone can become a good writer if you just practice, and immerse yourself in the reading of good essays.” In the beginning of the course my confidence level grew by leaps and bounds. While writing my first essay the words just seemed to flow from the keyboard. I finished this first essay in no time flat. As I sat back and reread my essay I thought “This is perfect, I will probably be told to just move on to English 101.” On the day the essay was due I held my head high as I turned in my work of art. The following class, when the papers were returned to us, my swollen head was quickly deflated. The realization that I am not ready for English 101 and I was going to study rules about things like sentence structure, what using a passive voice construction in my sentences even meant, find out what sentence fragments are and how to work them into a nearby sentence. My original fears returned and were peering directly back at me from the essay grading sheet. I really didn’t know very much about any of this and was going to have to put in some work to get my writings up to a college level. The fears that had returned to me was just the motivation I needed to do the practicing and research that would improve my writing skills. I went to

My first semester here at UIC I was obligated to take English 160. I can honestly say I thought I would be easily passing this course. I was used to the 5 paragraph essay in high school and assumed that things would be the same in college. After writing my first project for English 160 I felt invincible until I received my graded paper. I had no idea what I had done wrong because I had done so well in high school English. Finally I realized that I had to pick one theme for an entire paper and elaborate on it completely. Even though it took some time I felt…

Because of low pay, writing pedagogy receives short shrift in graduate programs and in professional development. Professors tend to see writing as one that some people are born to do and others are not. When we see assume that some students can't write, we overlook inequities in resources and preparation. While overlooking the fact people that can write tend to be privileged graduates of elite public and private schools, clustered in colleges and universities that value the liberal arts. Professors suggest that some students aren’t served by the essay, signing off on a tiered class system where some students get the good stuff while others are spared the task of having to think hard. The third issue that affects students writing and learning is affinity, often students who can't write, can write quite well if they’re taught in way that make sense to them. That means understanding essay writing as an analytical act that involves starting with something in a text that they don't already understand or know. For example, Try to figure out what's going on in the text, coming to conclusion, and finally sharing their discoveries with…

1). Sullivan discusses the topic of preparing for college and aims his discussion towards high school freshman and college students. The students he has found prepared enough for college had no difficulty reading materials of multiple ranges and subjects since they “loved to read” (pp. 1). Furthermore, students that are prepared know that exemplary writing takes exemplary effort, and they come willing to comprehend, study, converse, and evaluate their written works. Additionally, listening and thinking influences the different ideas that we can develop; this can affect our self-development and mental capabilities, which can increase opportunities for further engagement.…

This new found confidence carried over into the next essay and I found myself with no fear of writing. In fact the next essay felt natural. I was able to prewrite, revise and use citations like it was second nature. I feel like this class has given me a new poise in writing and the dread I once felt about writing has disappeared. I now keep a prewriting journal with all of my ideas that seem to flood my mind when I am…

After enrolling in the Dual Credit English Composition 1 class, I was afraid of many aspects of the course. I was petrified of meaningless things: deadlines, word counts, and plagiarism. Although each of those aspects are important to consider and be mindful of, they are, in no way, anything to worry over. I lost confidence in myself and my writing, through my own frightening thoughts. Almost a full semester into the class, I know now that through hard work and careful, in depth writing that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to. I learned that my silly fears were restraining me from accomplishing great things. I was able to overcome many obstacles pertaining to my writing, while in this class. One major obstacle that I was able to overcome and improve myself greatly on was transitioning; I ask myself, “How was I able to improve my transitioning skills in just one semester?” but the answer is quite clear: practice.…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

To start off with, the overall environment of being part of an AP/IB English class all throughout high school has made a positive affect on me. This has not only affected my familiarization with college level essays but I know what is expected from a higher level english course. As I have mentioned in my previous essay, I have written papers that were up to seventeen pages long. When I was in high school I often thought, why do I have to write so much, it would annoy me that every month was a new essay, now the idea of writing a lengthy paper has…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

But after reading “They Say/ I Say”, and going through a few classes discussing the text. I now have a deeper understanding of a writer’s audience, and how the importance of narrowing down who you are talking too in your essays is when trying to convince someone of something. Also, something I didn’t realize was that there are various ways and templates on introducing ideas, refuting ideas, summarizing ideas, etc. to help make your argument stronger. These templates in the They Say/I Say reading really gave me a bulk of new ways to introduce my ideas for my essay assignments in class, and really made me a better writer. This led to me seriously changing my writing process. Previously, I would simply sit on an essay assignment for a while and like most people, when the deadline or due date finally sneaks up on me I’d do it. This cycle of procrastinating really hurt my ability to string together strong coherent essays, even in my first two essays for the class. But because of my Professors emphasis on peer review and really the writing process in general, I can proudly say have changed my ways. I’ve now developed a pretty solid routine that includes first prewriting/invention, then drafting, then I revise/editing, then finally I reflect my writing. This has helped me completely avoid writer’s block, an issue I faced before taking this…

Richard Sterling, Executive Director Emeritus of the National Writing Project and Education professor at UC-Berkeley was the Chair of the Advisory Board. Together, these three figures had left an important imprint on composition as a field of work and study. Perelman explained one reason for his change of heart: “A tool that uses machine learning to analyze writing is inevitable, and if the composition community doesn’t build it correctly, others will build it badly.”…

Cavallaro’s Writing Center Studies class, in which I participated in the Winter 2016 quarter, I had the opportunity to collaborate with other students to generate a collection of ‘field notes,’ or in-depth observations of tutoring sessions in the CSUSB writing center, and at the Crafton Hills College tutoring center where I work. We were then asked to synthesize writing center theory and these observations into a ‘praxis’ paper; a combination of theory and practice. Building off the work of contemporary writing center scholars such as Nancy Grimm, Alice Gillam, and Rebecca Block, I was able to generate an original and constructive critique of how tutors and tutees interact with instructor prompts within tutoring sessions. Dr. Cavallaro and I are currently working on adapting this paper so that it can be submitted to the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) in 2018, one of the most prestigious conferences associated with Writing Center Studies. This positive research experience has strengthened my conviction that I am currently able to work at the level of a PhD student, and that therefore pursuing a doctoral degree would allow me to extend that work to the communities I am involved with in San Bernardino…

Coming into English 101 freshman year was something that I was very much afraid of. In high school English class never served as my strong point and I found myself constantly frustrated and confused as to why I never got the grade I felt I deserved. I would write essays to get it over with, using other people’s thoughts and ideas to support my seemingly less important thoughts and ideas about the subject. I never felt truly connected with any piece that I was asked to write and it showed, so coming into college being forced to do it all over again was definitely something I feared and something I wanted to get over with, but now I find myself kind of enjoying writing.…
