Investigation into the Application of Procedural Audio in Animated Film
Abstract
A development based project that investigates and explores the creation and design of sound effects and music using procedural audio for animated film. Traditional methods of recording and procedural audio will be compared by implementing rigorous testing and experiments. Academic conclusions will be drawn from the comparative testing by applying statistical analysis.
Introduction
“Procedural audio is sound qua process, as opposed to sound qua product. Procedural audio is non-linear, often synthetic sound, created in real time according to a set of programmatic rules and live input” (Farnell
2007, p.1). The application of procedural audio has been researched tremendously for the games industry however; not much discussion has happened about it 's application in advanced sound design for animated films. Film sound is designed predominantly by following the traditional methods of recording and mixing real world sounds. Film sounds are often very real and rich and it is harder to design by pure synthesis. Even though that 's the case there are situations, especially in animated films, where unreality (in sound) is what the film requires. Procedural audio is a powerful tool that can be used to design sound for animated films. In animation, the position, speed and characteristics of objects are well defined. Therefore it is easier to apply procedural audio to design sound using the various parameters set for the objects in the film during the graphic design process. “Procedural audio is highly dynamic and flexible; it defers many decisions until run time” (Farnell 2010). This project aims to investigate procedural audio and its application
