Introduction
Arup is a professional service firm specialising in engineering, design, planning, and project management and consulting services for the built environment. Arup is a global firm, present in Africa, North and South America, Australasia, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It has nearly 10,000 staff based in 92 offices spread over 35 countries with its headquarters situated in London, UK.
Sir Ove Nyquist Arup started the firm known as Ove N.Arup, Consulting Engineers in London in 1946. It set out to unite professionals of diverse disciplines to produce projects of a better quality than engineers working in solitary conditions. In 1963, Ove Arup and architect Philip Dowson formed Arup Associates. By 1970 the firm was reformed and became known as Ove Arup & Partners.

Size
In 2007, infrastructure output from civil engineering was £6.97 billion, representing 10% of all new construction, with infrastructure repair and maintenance estimated at a further £4 billion.
Construction of roads represented the largest sector (27%), together with railways and electricity; they represented 49% of new work output in 2007. [1]
Since then, there has been a major increase. In 2010 infrastructure output was measured at £12.63 billion with repairs and maintenance a further £6.77 billion. Roads, railways and water are the 3 largest sectors (at constant 2005 prices) representing 30%, 21% and 15% respectively, together making 66% of the market.
