I located an article in the University Library related to the direction of communication in work environments. Dr. Fred C. Lunenburg published an article titled “Formal Communication Channels: Upward, Downward, Horizontal, and External” on December 1, 2011. Based on the readings, I determined the article is a good source of information for research because the article has several attributes of a good source. An author must have credentials, project his or her writings to a definitive audience, lack bias, present opposing viewpoints, and have currency (not outdated) (Spatt, 2011).
The article meets the criteria for consideration as a credible and valid source. Dr. Lunenburg has impeccable credentials that indicate he has a surmountable level of professional experience and a solid academic background. He currently works as a Professor of Education at Sam Houston University and previously served as teacher, high school principal, and a school superintendent. Additionally, I learned Dr. Lunenburg has authored/co-authored more than 20 books and 100 articles between 1985 and 2011 (Spatt, 2011).
After reviewing the article, it appeared Dr. Lunenburg expressed his viewpoint impartially, but with intent to provide influential insight into different communication processes in various workplaces. The style and tone of the article demonstrated Dr. Lunenburg considered the viewpoints of others. The article appeared directed toward a broad audience wherefore the language in the article is easy for readers, outside of Dr. Lunenburg’s field of specialization, to understand. This article meets the criteria for a credible and valid source of information.
