But when day came he sat on the rocky shore and broke his own heart groaning, with eyes wet scanning the bare horizon of the sea. (45-49, 52-54)
This quote from The Odyssey written by the Greek poet named Homer expresses Odysseus’ pain. Homer is known to have been the first and greatest of the epic poets. The Odyssey is the story about the Greek hero Odysseus and his journey back home after the fall of Troy. The anguish he is expressing is inflicted on for being trapped on an island with the goddess named …show more content…
Calypso and the longing he has to be with Penelope again. Odysseus has always been loyal to his wife, there were just so many rough patches to finally lead up to the moment where he reunites with Penelope. Even though it may not seem like it at times, Odysseus is fully committed to his wife and it has been his goal for over 10 years to come back home to his wife.
Calypso is forced to let Odysseus free from the island by Hermes orders but she tricks Odysseus one last time to stay with her instead of Penelope. And this is what his response is,
My quiet Penelope—how well I know— would seem a shade before your majesty, death and old age being unknown to you, while she must die. Yet, it is true, each day
I long for home, long for the sight of home. (82-86)
Calypso is trying to convince Odysseus to stay with her because she is a goddess and people think he is already dead. Odysseus explains to her that he loves his wife for being human and that it wouldn't be fair to everyone if he doesn't come back because his people need him.
On Odysseus’ way home he visits the Land of Dead and is caught by surprise to see his mother there.
Odysseus speaks to the shade of his mother. She tells him that Penelope and
Telemachus are still grieving for him and his father, Laertes, has moved to the country, where he, too, mourns his son. Odysseus' mother explains that she died from a broken heart.

Filled with horror, Odysseus and his crew set sail. (118-121, 122) Odysseus realizes how much his family needs him and he's rushing to come back home to heal their wounded souls. Odysseus is eager to get back home because he realizes how much he is needed and how important it is that he must return.
Eventually, Odysseus finally arrives back to his homeland, but he has to be in disguise because he doesn't want to make a scene. After Odysseus had shot his arrow through the twelves axes and has killed all of the suitors, he his alone with his wife at last. Penelope doesn't believe it is him after so many years so Odysseus has to give her some sign that it is him and he did.
Woman, by heaven you've stung me now!
Who dared to move my bed?
No builder had the skill for that—unless a god came down to turn the trick
……………………………………………………………………..
There is our pact and pledge, our secret sign, built into that bed—my handiwork and no else's! (33-36, 38-40)
Odysseus is desperate to give Penelope a sign that it's him and his sign is that he built their bed out of an olive tree. That bed is their little secret and that shows that Odysseus still cares for his wife and that he hasn't forgotten. With this sign, Penelope rushes over to Odysseus to kiss him and ask for understanding.
Odysseus is proven to be faithful to his wife according to these examples given throughout. The only problem is that Odysseus' journey keeps getting delayed because of Poseidon and other interruptions from his enemies. This story makes us easily lose track of what this whole journey is all about. It's about Odysseus returning home to his people and his family and all the obstacles it takes to reach his goal. This story can apply to people in real life even with those creatures that aren’t real because that represents the things people use to escape reality or to just give them a temporary happiness. It's about home, the whole idea of it, and to have faith in other people even when they feel discouraged.
