Loyalty
In an epic poem such as the Odyssey, there are many themes. Out of all of the themes that were in the poem, the theme of loyalty can be considered the most important. As Odysseus begins to tell his story, he shows that his main priority is to go home to his family and bring home his men. In the story the Lotus Eaters, Odysseus shows the characteristic of loyalty for his men by saving them and not leaving them behind with the Lotus. In the Odyssey, Odysseus demonstrates many examples of loyalty to his men by doing whatever he can to get them home, even if it means sacrificing people. As Odysseus begins to tell his story, he depicts loyalty with his main priority of getting his men home safely and quickly. Odysseus’ devotion to his men was shown when he said “…in his deep heart at sea, while fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home.” (981, 8-9). Odysseus begins by showing that he was not only trying to get back home, but his men back also. Homer portrays how great Odysseus’ desire was to go home grew stronger the longer he was away, yet he still sacrifices so much for his men and him to go home. In addition Odysseus’ depicts his readiness to suffer for his men “…at that sight far the worst I ever suffered questing the passes of the strange sea.” (1010, 824-825). Although Odysseus is suffering at sea, he would rather be the one to suffer than his men. Odysseus continues sacrificing his state of mind that is being tested by his thoughts of reaching home. Odysseus’ suffer at sea shows his loyalty and dedication for the wellbeing of his men.
In the Odyssey, loyalty is an important theme because without loyalty they would never reach home. For example, Odysseus’ loyalty and dedication for his men is depicted in Lotus Eaters “…longed to stay forever…forgetful of their homeland.” (985, 99-100). Odysseus was the only one who did not give into the Lotus and did not eat it. As
