Finger Joint Laxity In Childbirth Research
Secondly, Lindgren and Kristiansson, 2014 and Boulvain et al are research papers discussing the finger joint laxity in childbirth/ pregnancy and how women experienced back pain. The study was based in Sweden it originally started out with 222 women and then dropped down to 188 women which were all healthy and not on any medication.
There was a questionnaire included which asked the women if they experienced back pain throughout the pregnancy and if they experience it during labour. Finger joint laxity is a weakness of connective tissue that can cause back pain during pregnancy and after birth. It was noticed during the fourth session closer to birth that 90 women were experiencing back pain and three months after.

    The sample size consisted of nulliparous women planning to give birth vaginally. The women were put into two groups based on the treatment they received, either epidural analgesia or other forms of pain relief including continuous midwifery support (CMS). Women who received epidural analgesia was n=690, and women who received other methods of pain relief was n=302. The results show that back pain was common before, during, and after pregnancy, and women were at risk for post-partum back pain at six months if they had back pain before pregnancy or at two months after pregnancy. There was no significant relationship between “epidural analgesia, mode of delivery, spontaneous or induced labor, birthweight, and back pain during pregnancy” with post-partum back pain at six months. Headache was much more common in women who received epidural analgesia, during pregnancy and at two months, but not at six months.     It is well known that female hormones effect the composition and structure of a variety of tissues. Females experience large fluxes of hormone levels including estrogen, progesterone, and sometimes relaxin. Because of such great fluctuations in the hormones of females, researchers have linked rate of ACL injury with levels of estrogen. Unfortunately, administering high doses of hormones to human patients poses great health risks, so most studies are conducted on animals. In one study performed by James Slauterbeck, MD, Vice Chairman of Orthopedics at Texas Tech Medical Center and a team physician for Texas Tech, female rabbits were subjected to different levels of estrogen to test for laxity in the knee joint. The ACL load failure rate was measured to be higher in those rabbits that received the estrogen supplements. This supported the hypothesis that females have increased laxity in their knee joints due to increased estrogen levels. The study further concluded that estrogen might play a factor in weakening the strength of the ACL in women. In addition to estrogen, relaxin, though present in small amounts, may also be a contributing factor to ACL tears in females. This hormone, usually present in high amounts during pregnancy, has been detected in trace amounts in ovulating females.
