Queensland University of Technology ensures safety after fire ant discovery on campus

The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has discovered live fire ants nest in five different locations across its Gardens Point Campus in Brisbane.

However, QUT is currently working closely with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries: Biosecurity Queensland in order promptly and efficiently remove the fire ants from the affected campus.

QUT Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter Coaldrake, says the safety of QUT’s students and controlling the spread of the ants are currently the “foremost and top priority” of the university.

QUT is still currently investigating how exactly the ants got onto Gardens Point campus.

The fire ants nest were able to be correctly identified by a staff member of QUT’s Facilities management as a result of training courses provided by the university.

QUT Facilities Management Director, Andrew Frowd, said he was “very impressed” with his staff’s prompt identification and reporting of the nests.

“It just goes to show QUT staff have excellent training in a wide range of situations which is really reassuring for anyone who frequents around the Gardens Point campus,” said Mr Frowd.
