Fire By Anne Bradstreet
Bradstreet was very upset and angry at the beginning of the story when all of her stuff burnt in the flames because she lost everything. Nothing came out of the fire the same, not even herself. She was devastated about this because she watched all the stuff she worked for, all the stuff she bought, all the gifts she was given, all of it went down in flames. She started blaming people, one of those people were god. She was asking god, why did this have to happen to me. I didn't do anything wrong to deserve this.
Then out of nowhere she isn't mad or sad. It´s almost like she flipped a switch or something came to her mind. She began to thank god even though all of her stuff is gone and she is left with nothing. She started thanking god because she is still alive and she believes god will help her and find better things for her. She then starts to tell the readers how she didn't care about her belongings because god has it under control. She then begins to talk about how

Bradstreet talks about topics such as her relationship with her husband and children and her struggles with religion. In her poem “A Letter to Her Husband, Absent upon Public Employment,” her husband was gone and coming back soon, but whenever she looked at her children, she was reminded of him. She wished he was there with her because he is like the sun, full of warmth and kindness, and her life revolved around him; without him she would be nothing. In her poem “Before the Birth of One of Her Children,” she believed that she was going to die during childbirth, but she wasn’t the only one, because many women back then had the same fear. Also, if she passed away, she was worried that her children were going to end up with a horrible stepmother, so she frequently asked God to protect her and her children. Although Bradstreet was a woman who expressed great amounts of faith, she was often left struggling when her feelings turned to resentment, confusion, and betrayal towards everyone around her. Often things went badly for her, and she doubted God because she thought he was punishing her for the wrong things she had done. Since she doubted God, she would pray and realize that everything happens for a reason. She wasn’t being punished; there was a lesson that needed to be learned, and when she struggled, she wouldn’t dwell on her sinfulness, she continued with living her life.…

In 2010, Laura Hillenbrand released a brilliant tribute to a resilient national hero, Louis “Louie” Zamperini, whose story was not widely known at the time. Fast forward four years and this tribute, Unbroken, has been made into a major motion picture and the remarkable story of the Olympian-turned-soldier has reached the masses. In the book Unbroken, which I read shortly after it was released, Hillenbrand chronicles Zamperini’s epic and, at times, terrifying odyssey. Raised in California, he was the son of Italian immigrants.…

    I. In Greece the polis of Sparta was the number one military authority for the people and for the time period. There was nothing that the Spartans could not do when it came to war. From the time that Spartan men were born, they were evaluated for their future services to the Spartan society. Each baby was sent to have the ten, ten, one test done on them as explained in the novel, The Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. This test was to check and make sure that there were no deformities. If there were the children were killed because they could not help the military, therefore had no purpose in their society as a whole. Sparta was a militarist state. The other helots and Athenians and so on, looked to the Spartans for guidance and often for overall protection during the times of war. Their society as a whole was very separated from the rest of Greece though. For example in the novel when Xeones talks about his dreams to be a Spartan he knows that he would never be recognized, while his cousin Diomache wants to be an Athenian she knows that is it possible. One could only call himself a Spartan if he was born of a Spartan in Sparta.…

There is some who would even curse God for letting such a tragedy happen to them. Bradstreet praises “The world no longer let me love,/ My hope and treasure lies above” (Bradstreet 53-54). Yet in another poem “As Weary Pilgrim” she states “ A pilgrim I, on earth perplexed/ With sins, with cares and sorrows vext” (Bradstreet 19-20). This is a clear view that at times Bradstreet questions her faith. She also states in a letter that she wrote to her children that she questioned the scriptures and that she never saw any miracles (Bradstreet). She is like many followers who wonder if they are really blind in their…

The book I read is Hunger Games Catching Fire. The author is Suzanne Collins, the genre of the book is Science Fiction. Catching Fire takes place in a futuristic community that is divided into Districts. District 12 is the one the main character Katniss Everdeen lives in. Katniss is a brave girl who is in her late teens. An example of Katniss being brave is when she crawls under an electric fence to get food for her friend Gale’s family. Kaniss is also very caring. Katniss shows an example of caring when Gale gets whipped and she carries him back to her house so his mom can treat his wounds. The conflict is external and it is person versus society. The conflict is when they are in the arena for the battle and Katniss and Peeta have to fight…

In The Embers and the Stars by Kohák the intersection of time and eternity is expressed. Kohák has focused on "natural" time, which is to say that time is not just what is expressed by a clock, or with a series of numbers on a clock. "It is, rather, set within the matrix of nature's rhythm which establishes personal yet non-arbitrary reference points." This means that time is not measured in seconds, minutes, or hours but by personal existence and experience. These "reference points" are experiences in your life that are meaningful and you help spatially distinguish points in time. Time as we know it is explained by Kohák as a "construct imposed upon nature's rhythm, subordination and ordering it". He does say that it is a useful construct, but as for the theory of relativity time does not hold up.…

When Bradstreet loses herself she sees her house goes up in flames and she says her heart starts to cry. That is really the first time that she feels sad in the poem and feels god's presence with her. Then you can tell that god is present because she is not worried that much at all. She knows that god is with her and that he has a better home built for her up above in Heaven. So she sees everything as being okay and not anything to be really that wrong if she leave the fate of her burnt house with god. Then in lines 14-20 she states that “ I Blest his name that gave and took that laid my goods now in the dust.” (Bradstreet, 29) So this is why she didn’t really know why this was happening to her because she did what all she was supposed to by praying and being a good christian women. That is why she didn’t understand why a tragedy like this would strike her. She said that her heart was crying because her house was burnt down and she didn’t really know why. So she was having a really hard time coping with this until she finally realized that it was okay. She began to realize that she would be perfectly fine and that there would be nothing to worry about. Then she really sees god being in her presence.…

The word Gaslight or the action the action of gaslighting does not just mean the light produced by the combustion or burning of some form of illuminating gas or fuel, Gas lighting is a lot more than that, according to Theodore Dorpat’s book “On the double whammy and gas lighting”, Gas lighting is: A form of mental abuse in which information is twisted/spun, selectively omitted to favor the abuser, or false information is presented with the intent of making victims doubt their own memory, perception and sanity. (Dorpat 91) Gas lighting as a form of mental abuse can easily be seen in the 1944 film Gaslight, where by the deranged, antagonistic, sociopath, murderer and thief of a husband Gregory Anton makes or creates events like, the diming…

"Anyway, tomorrow is another day," is the last sentence that Scarlett says in Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell has encouraged me when I encounter difficulties after I immigrate to the United States. Sometimes when things do not have smooth processes, I try to think everything should become fine, and do not let frustration make me give up. I have learned it from Scarlett, whose daughter dies, and her husband leaves her. No matter what she experiences, she tries to cheer up a little glimpse of hope which she can get her husband's love back. Persistence, optimism, courage and indomitable spirit are several reasons that I like her. When I look at the problem with optimism, I will calmly find a lot of ways to solve them; nevertheless, my irritable anxious mood only makes things worse. There are many unsatisfactory things in a difficult life, and I find that an attitude adjustment is a key point dealing with the struggles.…

Colonialism is an integral part of the history of the planet. It is the reason why so many nations have stark cultural similarities with others. Colonialism is responsible for many people being able to understand each other through speaking the same language. Colonialism was the start of the recent phenomenon called globalization. This earth has seen colonialism for many centuries as far back as ancient Greek and Egyptian civilization. Colonialism, as we know it today however is the domination, acquisition, exploitation, or expansion, of one territory by another territory. This usually means the colonist and the colony are in two separate regions or even two separate continents. It typically includes the subjugation of the people of the land being colonized. This colonizing behavior dates back to the early 1400’s with its roots in Europe which began with the Portuguese and the Spanish.…
