Catching Fire, By Suzanne Collins
Have you ever had something that you felt is or represents a special part of you? Maybe a lucky charm, idem, or animal that gives you strength? In the book “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins and the Hunger Games book series Katniss’s spirit animal/mascot that she was known for was the mockingjay. After her second hunger games Katniss rebelled against the capital and was well known as the mockingjay. the mocking jay symbolizes the strength and rebellion in Katniss.

One reason mockingjays symbolize rebellion is because Mocking jays were not even supposed to exist. There was a mistake made by the capital. Mockingjays were accidentally made after the horrible failed experiment from the capital when they made a genetically engineered bird, called a jabberjay and released them into the world to eavesdrop on the citizens and rebels in district and record their full conversations using them as spies. Soon the rebels caught on and used the jabberjays for counter-intelligence. The capital was politically embarrassed so they abandoned the project. They only created males, so they expected the mutations to just die out. However, unexpectedly, the jabberjays mated with female mockingbirds. People called

Katniss said it was what she would have worn if snow didn't force her and Peeta into the games (which is not true). At the end of the interview Katniss stood up and spun around while her dress once again burst into flames disintegrating the poofy dress turning it into a black and blue mockingjay dress and opened her arms spreading her wings. I think by this she is saying she is the mockingjay and she will not bow down to President Snow. Quote:”President Snow: Hope, it is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective, a lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, as long as it's contained.”

The mockingbird also represents the injustice in the world as they get killed even though it is unfair and considered a sin. In this story the injustice is showed in Tom’s trial. Even thought he was innocent he was sentenced to jail and then later killed just because he was a black man. This displays that no justice was given just because of his race. Later on after Tom Robinson is shot, his death is compared to “the senseless slaughter of songbirds” (p.241) or the death of a mockingbird. Therefore the mockingbird also symbolizes the injustice in the novel.…

The motivation that Katniss showed through her actions is away that I am when helping others, or in a bad situation. Not once in the movie did I see her give up on anything, even if she had gotten hurt really bad. She stuck to what she had to do or either what she was going to do in order to get things back to how they were. Even when it came to helping another team player, she didn’t see it as a threat which showed how caring she…

She uses the symbol of the mockbird to represent two of the main characters. Atticus says, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit'em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” The author uses this quote to introduce Tom Robinson. Tom represents the mockingbird because he was falsely accused of assault and put away in jail. Tom was a kind innocent person that only brought good to the world, and when he was prosecuted it was as if they killed a mockingbird. Miss Maudie then explains the phrase said by Atticus, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing except for make music for us to enjoy, they don’t eat up people's gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. Thats why its a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Harper Lee also uses Boo radley as a symbol of the mockingbird because Boo has been secluded in his home for most of his life, the town folks made rumors that Boo was crazy, mental, and psycho. Boo is a mockingbird because when he killed Bob Ewell it was to protect the children and telling the town of what he did would only add ges to the fire. The author used the symbol of the mocking bird to introduce…

For Katniss, survival has become more than just hiding out and avoiding the Careers; she recognizes that truly to survive, she must play the Game to win. Now in the Catching Fire book, “A mockingjay is a creature the Capitol never intended to exist. They had not counted on the highly controlled jabberjay having the brains to adapt to the wild, to pass on its genetic code, to thrive in a new form. They had not anticipated its will to live.” (Katniss 92) Katniss is talking about the mockingjay, the iconic symbol of the rebellion, but she may as well be talking about herself. The spirit of resistance and rebellion is alive in Katniss, though she doesn’t yet realize it. She survived her first Hunger Games despite being from the poorest District with, historically, the least-prepared tributes. Like the mockingjay, no one expected her to survive, but she was able to adapt to survival. The tributes themselves are symbols of a war fought 75 years ago, and their deaths serve as a reminder of the power the Capitol wields. However, the Capitol underestimated Katniss’s own will to live, as well as her defiance. Katniss is more than a symbol she is a human being. She has grown up under the Capitol’s rules, and now they are forced to contend with…

Katniss’ designer, Cinna, knows that in order for Katniss to be remembered she has to have a unique costume from the other tributes. He does this by creating an outfit that represents the industry of her district in a way that it has never been represented before. "Coal miner thing's very overdone. No one will remember you in that," (66). Although Katniss' outfit makes her stand out from the other tributes, they do not resemble her. They are superficial and she is dressed in a way to entertain the Capitol and raise her the amount of sponsors. This furthermore strengthens the importance and value that the Capitol places on appearances rather than hard work, effort, and talent that District twelve…

The symbol of The Mockingbird represents various characters throughout the novel and helps develop the theme of moral injustice. Tom robinson is an example of a “Mockingbird” because he never did anything wrong, however he was shot and wrongfully accused. The explanation of “a mockingbird” can be found in the book when Miss.Maudie says “ Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy (...) they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird”(Lee, 119). This explains why it is wrong for one to kill a mockingbird; since they do not cause anyone misfortune, it would be morally unjust to cause them misfortune. Tom Robinson is symbolized as a mockingbird…

There are many different "mockingbird" characters in Harper Lee's classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Early on in the novel, Atticus tells his children to "shoot all the blue jays that you want, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" (Lee 103). He says this because mockingbirds are known to be harmless creatures that do nothing but sing joyously. Lee cleverly uses this mockingbird imagery to title her classic novel and to describe characters that are kind, innocent people and have done nothing wrong, but are destroyed by the society around them.…

In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the symbolism of the “mockingbird” plays a significant role in the story. The mockingbird comes to represent the idea of true goodness and innocence. In the novel, the theme of the symbol is used to exemplify the innocent ones who are injured by the evil of human nature. Tom Robinson and Arthur (Boo) Radley are the examples of that. Atticus tells Scout and Jem, “Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (103). Because Scout did not understanding this, Miss Maudie explains to her why Atticus is correct, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, they don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us” (103). Mockingbirds…
