The ability for wildland firefighters to protect urban centers is decreased as the amount of urban areas encroach on wildland habitat. The cabin on the mountain is a great place to live. The views over the vast valleys, forests, and other mountain peaks make a mountain peak a perfect place to set up a home. A problem occurs when a lighting storm or human action causes a fire. When a forest fire threatens the cabin, wildland firefighters are called to put the fire out so the cabin does not burn down. As fires grow in size, the cost of managing wildfires is increasing. Recently in Jackson, Wyoming another forum was held to discuss WUI planning. This forum was closed to the public in an effort, “to encourage participants to propose even the most politically unfavorable ideas” (HCN). The desire was to focus on the science, current policy, and economic side of the argument and remove the values arguments that could cloud the discussion. The members of the forum proposed several ideas for govern the WUI development. This means that a group of individuals discuss their individual values and come to an agreement that every person can agree.
