I escaped to the North my first time, I underground a railroad that i think should be called the "upperground railroad," and I honors "those good men and women for their noble daring, and applaud them for willingly subjecting themselves to bloody persecution," but i am also adamantly opposed to anyone revealing the means whereby slaves escape. I was in need of money to escape, so I proposed to Hugh Auld that he "hire his time." They were great people for helping me, but one day i decided to make a plan an escape, but i got snitched on. Later I was sent to live with Mr. Edward Covey in January; I had found myself a field hand for the first time in my life. My new master was different was that he knew what hard work meant, he would work with his hands. Mr. Edward Covey discovered himself as religious, but of course this was very hypocritical. My worst experiences in the bonds of servitude have been with my new master. I was worked nearly to death in all weathers. I decided to register a complaint and decided to head to St. Michael's. This was a long weary road for me in the bad condition i was in , and at times i had to hide from Covey who pursued me for a while. I told master thomas but he didn't believe so I decided to return back to Covey's farm, where I would his in the corn for a while where covey couldn't find me.that evening I had stayed with a slave named sandy , which made me change my decision of going back to work , saying that if I would carry a particular root on my right side, that i will not been touched since he had done the same. it high it was true but it wasn't, master covey attacked me and I fought back,and after 2 hours if combat this fight ended. for the next six months my master never laid a hand on me. My tenure with Covey ended after a year, and i was hired out to William Freeland in January 1834. Freeland was the best
