First They Killed My Father Analysis
“I wanted to die so I didn’t have to face it. But I knew I had to keep going” (Ty). This is from a survivor of the tragic Cambodian genocide that is explained by Loung Ung in her novel First They Killed My Father. The story goes in depth of her struggles during the genocide being only the age of 5. She puts on a display of strength and perseverance during her journey as a victim of the Khmer Rouge. Loung and her family were starving throughout their journey through the genocide. It got to the point when rations were not enough. They had to steal food in order to get the amount needed to survive. They would think of how hungry they were and it almost got to them. “Dreaming of food makes my stomach growl with pain. I’d give anything now for a tiny piece of moon cake or a leg of roasted duck. My mouth waters at the thought, and a wave of sadness washes over me” (Ung 80). Loung and her entire family is starving. They need food in order to survive. Loung almost wants to give up because of her hunger. But she knows she has to push through it while others might give up. She pushed through, stayed cool, and even stole food in order to survive and she did. She made it out of the genocide and is still living today because of how she kept her cool and did not give up.
