Explain the metabolism of alcohol. What are the five basic effects of alcohol on the central nervous system? Identify two systems of the body and alcohols effect on them.
The body begins to metabolize and eliminate alcohol through oxidation as soon as it is ingested. The liver metabolizes large amounts of alcohol and small amounts are eliminated in the feces and nursing release some alcohol in their milk. The initial step is the conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde by the enzyme ADH. The acetaldehyde is converted by another liver enzyme to an active acetate that is broken down into carbon dioxide and water. The metabolism of alcohol results in significant changes in the ratio of important chemicals within the liver cells. The average adult can oxidize 10-15 grams of alcohol per hour.
Five basic effects of alcohol on the central nervous system include, acute and chronic brain damage, peripheral nerve dysfunction, cerebral and cortical atrophy
The Cardiovascular System: alcohol can cause an increase in the heart rate as well as lessened stoke power. It decreases resistance to blood flow throughout the body, resulting in a reduction in blood …show more content…
In pre-contemplation, consciousness raising must take place. That is when the individual gains knowledge about him/herself and is his/her behavior through discussion, reading, etc. A change process is contemplation is self-reevaluation, individual recognizes how a current behavior conflicts with his/her goals and values. In preparation a change process is self-liberation, individual decides to make commitment to change often with specific goals. A change process of the action stage is stimulus control, individual avoids or counters stimuli that elicit problem behavior through restructuring environment, avoiding high-risk cues etc. In maintenance, a change process is social liberation, individual works for change in society through policies/political action, advocating for rights of oppressed,
