Flag Football

Flag Football is a version of American or Canadian football. It is very popular worldwide. The basic rules of the game are similar to those of the mainstream game that is often called tackle football but instead of tackling players to the ground the defensive team must remove a flag or flag belt form the ball carrier “ de flagging” to end a down. Other rules are you can have a minimum of five players. No jewelry or things like that that would get in the way. All pads and braces must be worn above the waist. Bare feet are not allowed you must wear tennis shoes or rubber cleats. Cleats with metal are not okay if you do wear them you won’t be able to play. There are no set uniforms but you have to tuck in your shirt or jersey. You don’t need a ball or bat or racket of any kind to play this game. You just need flag belts. They are like a belt that you can clip or snap on to your body. They have flags hanging down that allow other players to pull off of you. They have to be visible to the other players. That is why their shirt has to be tucked in. Free kicks are not aloud in flag football only punting and it can not be quick punting that is not aloud either. Touchdowns are the biggest way to get points just like in American football. It gives the team six points. Each team is aloud two one minute time out period per half. The game can go from about one to two hours long. It is played all over the United States. There can be anywhere from as little of four to eleven or twelve players on each team. It is one of the only sports that can be played with both male and female on the field at one time. Or they can have their own games. The sport has a strong amateur following and several nation and international competitions each year sponsored by various associations and companies. People take it very seriously but the game is also played just for fun. There are also festivals such as the International Flag Football Festival organizes

Flickerball was created by Davidson College in 1951 for an alternative for football. Flickerball is very similar to American football. It is usually played in gym classes. The offensive game rules are that players are divided into two equal teams. One team taking the ball at their 10 yard line starts the game. Only passing and catching may advance the football. Passes may be overhand, underhand, or sidearm and in any direction but must go at least 5 years. Hand-offs are illegal. Players most stop once they have caught the ball and past it within 5 seconds. If the ball touches the ground or floor the ball goes to the other team. There are no downs as the ball is continuously in play. It is a touch down when a player catches a pass in the end zone. All touchdowns are worth 1 point. The game is played best when the offensive team spreads out and keeps moving using the entire field.…

Football is by far the main sport played and watched in the United States, and it is becoming more popular around the world. The history of the game dates all the way back to the eighteen hundred, with people who did not wear any equipment, to present day, having a thousand or more dollars of gear rigged onto their body. A lot of people are fans of a team or just fans of the game but many people do not know how much the game has evolved from such a simple and aggressive sport to a complex game that uses much more than just power and aggression, as current players have to use their brain to win games. Since football started the offense has evolved into many different offenses including tight and spread formations To understand the game…

Eighth grade year, gym class, flag football. I remember this day like it was yesterday. I had a fuming hatred for the gym teachers and their actions toward these pre-pubescent kids who take everything a little too personally, but with these rude teachers each and every reaction from each and every kid was appropriate. The only way I could describe these teachers is 40 year olds who find joy in making 13 year olds miserable. So, it all began when the flag football unit started. I wasn’t afraid of the evil humans we called gym teachers; I spoke my mind. Football was usually the last unit every year and every year the girls had to relearn how to play football, while the boys got to go play outside right away without an ounce of review. Because I am me, this wasn’t going to fly.…

It is played with a stick and a small, hollow tennis sized ball. The uniform consists of the jersey, usually a kilt, over-sized shin guards and usually football or baseball cleats depending on which the person prefers. The object of the game is to dribble the ball up the field with only the flat edge of the stick, which happens to be on the inside. This calls for you to flip the stick back and forth while running up the field. You also need to be bent over because the stick is always shorter than your normal standing height. This tends to cause your back to be overly sore. The rules don't allow for you to block the balls with your stick or body and in order to shoot the ball you have to stand on the edge of the crease, which is 16 yards from the 8x8 goal. This makes it rather difficult to easy score. Since there are so many rules to the way in which you can use your stick, the height the ball can be off the ground, whether or not the ball hits a body, it tends to leave the ref blowing his whistle very often. Playing a game where the ref is calling fouls every time you start running makes the game not…

As a cheerleader, I took part in a high energy and enthusiasm activity, yet I craved more. “More” just so happened to be flag football. The summer before I entered the first grade I asked my parents if I could make the transition. My request was met with emotions including concern, intrigue, but most of all, support. My parents were not going to dissuade me from participating in any hobby, especially one I seemed so interested in pursuing. I showed up to the first practice with my curly, blonde hair pulled back in a tight ponytail. I was enthusiastic to learn and participate in the sport over which my whole family went ballistic each Sunday night in the dead of winter. Upon my much awaited arrival, the coach's wife asked what number I wanted to have on the back of my extra-small jersey. I thought ‘one’ was the…

September 13, 2013, was sixteen year old Damon Janes’ last football game. Why, because he was pronounced dead in a local Buffalo hospital three days after that game. His cause of death, brain damage. Janes took numerous hits to the head during a varsity football game. He seemed perfectly healthy, but in actuality, he suffered brain swelling, bleeding, and bruising all resulting from numerous hits to the head while playing football. Janes was only one of the eight high school athletes who died in 2013 from the brain and spine injuries they suffered while playing high school football. In addition to brain trauma, heart conditions, asthma and heat stroke have contributed to three times more deaths in high school players than in college football; all of which may have been prevented. Since the early 1900s the game of football has continuously evolved in an effort to protect its players from injuries and fatalities. In fact, the rules and equipment changes over the years have done just that for college and NFL players. Sadly, according to a number of studies, this is not the case at the high school level where many of these fatalities could have been avoided. It’s time to make high school football as safe as college and professional football so the rewards outweigh the risks.…

American football as we know it originated from rugby played in Britain in the mid-19th century. The person who Americans consider the “Father of American Football” is Walter Camp. Professional football can be traced back to 1982, when there was a $500 contract for the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club to play a game against each other. Originally football was primarily a sport of the Midwestern industrial towns in the United State. In 1902, the American Professional Football Association was formed and two years later the National Football League. The competition was fierce between the two leagues, which led the two leagues to merge. Football eventually became national. When the two leagues merged is when…

There’s a need for Malaysia to find a talismanic striker. Let’s face the facts, Safee Sali may be the best striker in the region but with his age peaking at 27, there’s a need to search for his next successor. Norshahrul Idlan Talaha is our country’s next best thing but he is only a year younger than Safee so a young hungry hitman to emulate this duo has to be discovered soon. Fortunately with the emergence of Shakir Ali (Negeri Sembilan), Abdul Manaf Mamat (Terengganu), Afiq Azmi (Kuala Lumpur), Shahrul Azwari and Hazwan Bakri (Harimau Muda) , national coach K.Rajagopal doesn’t have to look far. With some guidance and polishing, we could have more potent strikers coming up the ranks in the near future.…

Playing volleyball in high school our coaches never told us about the different offensive systems, all we knew is that while on the court we had two setters, three hitters, a backrow and a libero. The setters would be in opposite positions, i.e if the first setter was in position 1 then the second setter would be in 4, and our offense would work around that format. But after doing a little research I found that there were offensive setups called systems the 5-1, the 6-2, and the 4-2.…
