Social media are the forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos). Teenagers have their phones out every second and while they’re using their phone, they begin to either go on Snapchat and send pictures to their friends or on Twitter tweeting what they’re doing in the moment. With these small routines, it’s actually causing a problem in our society. Teenagers nowadays are using social media more than they should for their use of time.
Problems are starting to evolve like mutations in genes evolving into humans. Teenagers are losing out on the ability to learn and read about social cues. They can’t learn to read …show more content…
nonverbal behavior properly due to their interacting in the virtual world. Teenagers are facing issues by not cooperating with others. They’re also starting to be exclusive and cliquey than learning to be inclusive in the real life. Teenagers nowadays need to learn how to deal with free time without staring at a screen. With less screen, they will have more opportunity to learn how to relax and use their leisure time.
Social media creates excessive drama. This is because positive messages are read as more neutral than they are intended to be; neutral messages are read as more negative as they are intended to be and one can only imagine what happens with messages that are intended to be negative. The teens who are already sleep-deprived are becoming more sleep-deprived because many of them are up until the wee hours of the night texting. Teenagers need to learn to be present in the moment. Too often, I see teens on their smartphones when they are in the company of their peers. They lose the ability to interact mindfully in the moment. Honestly, even adults do that to each other and it is quite upsetting. Teenagers are more aggressive and sexual when they feel anonymous and are communicating electronically. Things can get out of hand very quickly with both cyberbullying and sexuality, as we are painfully aware. These problems occur everyday which brings more anxiety to the teenagers and for their future generation.
An example like this is the condition of a seventeen years old girl named Paulina.
Paulina lives in San Francisco, California. Her nationality is Serbian. She’s a junior in high school and practices karate daily. Paulina has an addiction to social media. Paulina logs into social media every fours hours a day. She enjoys texting her friend in Messenger. She likes to see what other people posted in Instagram. She enjoys playing around with the Snapchat filters. She also likes tweeting out in Twitter on what she is doing on her free time. She will even stalk some people just to make sure how their relationship with a loved one is going or seeing who's single and ready to mingle. She even watches YouTube videos and plays games on her
phone.
With this distraction, Paulina has a hard time getting her homework done, she also is starting to slack off in school. She isn't giving any attention to her parents and siblings which they start to feel despondent with her performance. She's starting to be rude and show attitude to people when she talks. She also isn't getting enough sleep due to using social media everyday. She's also starting to deteriorate every time when she has a chore or has karate practice. With all this social media, Paulina feels depressed in the inside and she's afraid to face reality. Paulina is starting to realize that she's using her phone way too much and it's causing her to be unsuccessful. She decided she will keep track of ways not to use her phone on daily basis. It turns she can't help it because every time something comes up she needs to check out what it is. Until now, she is trying her best to overcome her addiction of social media. It turns out that she's doing a fantastic job due to her parents punishing her every time she uses her phone where she shouldn’t be using it. They’re also rewarding her every time she doesn’t use her phone where she can actually be using it. In the end of the day, Paulina will realize that social media isn’t a need in your life. It’s just there to be a distraction. Although, problems often cause havoc in people’s life, there are ways to prevent and fix problems. In this case social media has caused people to potentially hurt one another due to social media being on while driving, as well as causing Paulina to miss homework assignments and also forcing her grade to drop since she is not paying as much attention in class due to social media. These problems are widespread throughout the current generation. If enough effort is put in these problems can be fixed. One solution can be limiting screen time in which a person sets a set screen time and enforces it. For example, Joe has a schedule set when from 4:00 to 5:00 everyday he can be online but starting at 5:00 he has to do something productive such as homework or else he faces a consequence. If more people begin to limit screen time a study done by Paradigm Malibu shows a drastic increase in academic performance. Another possible solution can be limiting the amount of devices one holds. Often times a person may hold multiple devices such as a phone, tablet, and a laptop. A person who owns possession of that many devices often wants to have time on every device, thus limiting the productive time of a person’s life. A potential solution can be a person sets a device limit. An example of this is Bob has a phone and a tablet, but would like to get a laptop all for personal entertainment use. Instead of Bob running out and buying the laptop he trades in either his phone or tablet for the laptop so he still owns a limited amount of devices but also has the device(s) he wants. Social media has it’s issues, but if a plan is strictly enforced these issues can be corrected. All in all, even though many enjoy social media it has caused many problems. Some problems can be fixed some can’t be. Ratifying some current issues will limit the damage and only make social media a better place. Social media will be around for many years to come and it’s better to fix it’s issues early on than continuing to let it do damage.
